ThorpeWood

ThorpeWood ThorpeWood reconnects humans and nature to promote mental health, wellness, and environmental stewardship.

ThorpeWood is a 155-acre mountain retreat located in the Catoctin Mountains near Thurmont, MD. Our beautiful setting of forests, meadows, an arboretum, wetlands, and native trout streams provides a tranquil location for our primary mission – to be the "natural resource" choice for area non-profits exploring nature, retreating, and learning with horses. Also, ideal for corporate retreats, wedding, anniversaries, birthdays, etc.

Garden season is waking up at ThorpeWood!

With the help of some amazing students from Hood College , our garden is getting a fresh start - beds prepped, seeds planted, and a new little greenhouse coming to life, generously donated by one of our incredible volunteers and built by these hardworking students. And of course, Scratch was on-site making sure quality control standards were… loosely followed!

There’s something powerful about getting our hands in soil, especially when it’s our own compost, coming full circle. At ThorpeWood, environmental stewardship isn’t just a value, it’s a responsibility. A commitment to tending the earth with intention, respect, and care so it can continue to support all who find healing here.

We’re rolling up our sleeves for Earth Day!

On Wednesday, April 22nd at 11am, the ThorpeWood team will be cleaning up a large section of Catoctin Hollow Road.

Caring for the environment is a core part of our mission. We believe that when people feel connected to nature, they’re more likely to protect it. This is one simple, tangible way to do just that.

If you’d like to join us, we’d love the extra hands. *This opportunity is best suited for adult volunteers.

Email: jchristiansen@thorpewood.org for more details.

Show up. Do good. Leave it better. 🌿

Your mission, should you choose to accept it: join City Nature Challenge as a citizen scientist and capture photo evidence of local wildlife and plants. Help Mobilize Frederick and the DC Metro team climb the global leaderboard and turn your discoveries into real data that supports sustainability and conservation efforts in our community and around the world!

Using the iNaturalist app, we'll record plant and animal species at ThorpeWood, contributing to an international data collection effort that brings insight to the fight against climate change and its impact.

Bring:
- Walking shoes
- Smart phone
- Lunch, if you want to stay to enjoy a picnic!

This is a free event, but registration is required: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/sdah88c

Big news from the mountain...

Our brand new ThorpeWood website is officially live!

This project has been a real labor of love, and we’re incredibly grateful to the talented team at Octavo Designs for bringing our vision to life with such care, creativity, and intention. They helped capture the heart of what we do in a way that feels true to us.

We’d love for you to take a wander through the site - explore, click around, and see what's new.

And… fair warning: you might catch a typo or a link that’s still finding its footing. We were a little too excited to keep this to ourselves any longer. Updates and fresh photos are already in the works.

Go check it out and let us know what you think!

This is a free event, but we recommend you arrive early as seating is limited - and we anticipate this month's topic being especially popular.

These free events are possible due to the generous donations from the community. Registration appreciated: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/ev/reg/zw8n6u7

Last night, we gathered for our Vernal Equinox Celebration and welcomed spring... in the rain. Which actually felt just right 💚

Despite the weather, we had a wonderful turnout and an evening full of connection. Hiking the trails together, we enjoyed the earliest signs of spring beginning to emerge, and paused to listen to a glorious chorus of spring peepers echoing through the woods.

We gathered for tea, cookies, and honey from (whose hives are here at ThorpeWood!) - and dried ourselves by the fire. Together, we learned about some of the beautiful traditions practiced by Indigenous communities native to this region to honor the changing seasons and welcome the return of spring.

A huge thank you to our Sustainability Committee for creating such a meaningful evening, and an extra-special shout out to Kim who made amazing Vernal Equinox event tokens as special keepsakes for everyone who came 🐸💗

Sometimes the waiting feels long, but gathering in the rain, at the edge of a new season, we're reminded: growth is already happening. Happy Spring, everyone 🌿

us for our Nature on Tap Speaker Series at RAK Brewing Co. on Tuesday, March 10th, featuring aquatic ecologist Mark Southerland who will be sharing all about what he calls "savvy salamanders."

Salamanders are some of the most fascinating and overlooked residents of our forests and streams. Mark will share insights into the remarkable lives of these secretive amphibians and the vital role they play in healthy ecosystems.

We’ll also explore the importance of vernal pools - temporary spring wetlands that provide critical habitat for salamanders and other wildlife - and discuss current efforts to better protect these unique ecosystems.

Photos are of salamanders found at ThorpeWood! Thanks, !
