Thankfully today our building is full of laughter and love! We have a building full of happy residents that are well cared for. ❤️
Then and Now – Today, we’re comparing views looking at the Shawhan Hotel on fire in the middle of the top photo. That photo was taken on the evening of December 8, 1976 and the weather that night was very cold and blustery. There were two fires in view when the fire fighters arrived - one on the far west side of the hotel, and the other above the East Perry Street entrance. All off-duty Tiffin firemen were immediately called in and area fire departments were called to help including: Findlay, Fostoria, Fremont and volunteer units from: Clinton, Old Fort, Green Springs, Republic and Clyde.
The wind was causing embers to travel to area rooftops, so efforts were also required to prevent new fires. As the temperatures dropped to below 10 degrees, firefighters suffered the effects of the cold. Overspray from the fire hoses was coating everything in the area in layers of ice, which added weight to the hoses and cause treacherous walking conditions. It was so cold that the firemen were filling their boots with water from the fire hoses to prevent frostbitten feet and toes.
As seen in the top photo, the interior of the upper floors were fully involved and we can see that the roof has caved in, allowing the flames to shoot skyward. This was the holiday season and we can also see a Christmas wreath decoration on the street light pole on the lower left. The fire department battled the fire throughout the night and by morning there were only a few areas of smoldering ruins.
The bottom photo is how this view looks today, 49 years later. After years of being mothballed and through great efforts, the Shawhan building was restored and brought back to life. Today, it’s the Elmwood at the Shawhan, an assisted living facility.
