Happiest of Birthdays Grandpa!

Dr. Beal took over his parents’ practice in Rochester, NY and focused on working with musculoskeletal conditions. He taught at Michigan State University where he edited “The Principles of Palpatory Diagnosis and Manipulative Technique” with world renown Osteopaths John Upledger of Upledger Institute and Lawrence Jones of the Jones Institute. In 1995 he received the Andrew Taylor Still Medallion of Honor, for outstanding accomplishments in scientific or professional affairs in Osteopathic medicine.

Dr. Beal is beloved by both his patients and everyone who knows him. He had a deep kindness and quiet, humble nature. As a Naturopathic doctor, I am the only family member to have truly followed in his footsteps. We shared a special moment while I visited him in 2017; when he imparted some ancestor’s wisdom on me, one seasoned Doctor to a soon to be Doctor.

Mind you, there was a hesitant moment between us when he began teaching me about “pretend problems”. He explained that although he focused on musculoskeletal issues, many patients came to him without a real physiological problem. He said he knew that all these patients needed was for someone to listen to them deeply, so he did. That was the moment I truly felt this man and the legacy of my ancestors moving through me. The practice of listening deeply to understand and treat the whole person, not just the symptom, is the heart of both Osteopathic and Naturopathic medicine and the essence of Root Cause medicine.

Few people gain this kind of wisdom directly from their ancestor. And I know I am blessed to carry on the family legacy of doctoring. My grandfather has always been a man of very few words. It was a remarkable gift to gather his wisdom while experiencing the twinkle in his eye, his grin, and his joyous laughter as we talked about the art of manipulations and philosophy of treating the whole person. As I take up the mantle of the family legacy, I know that my ancestors are standing firmly behind me and I have his blessing. I experience him by my side each day I place my hands on a patient.

I guest lectured today at my alma mater! Super fun teaching the next generation of docs. A great reminder how far I've come. I love being able to help my patients and teach docs how to help these patients! There is so much hope of you've suffered a brain injury no matter the cause. (Did not get the proper picture so enjoy the title slide from my laptop).

I am so excited to announce that as of 9/19/2023 I will be consolidating my practice to 1 location! I will be full-time (T-Friday) at Nurture Integrative Health Clinic. I will be at Meliora Clinic until the end of August. After which will be joining Meliora and is a great fit.

I will continue to see patients with private insurance at Nurture Integrative Health Clinic but am not taking any new Care Oregon patients at this time. Due to this transition, I am currently closed to new patients but have a waitlist that will reopen to new patients in October.

I have been grateful for the ability to help many people on the east side and looking forward to consolidating my energy into one location. Feel free to reach out to get on my waitlist.

I have been waiting to take this class for several years. The timing is final perfect.

Early in my schooling I shadowed a traditional osteopath that did a lot of strain counterstrain technique. I was honored to get mentorship in this technique. A technique Dr. Laurence Jones created after noticing high velocity adjustments were not enough. I saw how much benefit patients received from this work. Some patients would term it "magic".

It also landed me so close to my own lineage of my grandfather Myron C. Beal. Who worked with greats like Dr. John Upledger of the Upledger Institute. I think in another life I would have been an osteopath.

When you have injury or illness inflammation can get trapped in interstitial tissue diminishing blood flow. This leads to muscle spasms, pain, fibromyalgia, and chronic issues. By working with the venous, arterial, nervous, and musculoskeletal system it can get back to homeostasis. When this inflammation gets trapped it can lead to long term inflammation including neuroinflammation that often see in post-concussion complications. This technique can help brain fog, headaches/migraines, tremors, functional neurological disorder, and so much more.

It's huge plus to learn aside classmates and wisdom keepers. .hayley_ and Dr. Jen McNeal .

Come join me for a great professional lecture weekend of February 11-12th to learn more about long covid and it's overlap with post concussive syndrome. I'll be talking about the recent research on TBI blood markers that were found in long covid patients. Discuss how we can use what we know about concussions to treat long covid neurological symptoms.

Honored to among this amazing lineup!!!

I don't have enough words for the honor it was to share my passion with all my colleagues at regarding . Thank you all for your engagement and willingness to help support the 3.8 billion people that suffer from concussions yearly. We have so much to offer.

This talk stretched me in so many ways. I can say it was the largest talk of my career and the most rewarding. I have learned so much about self. The most important being we are always more brilliant than we realized.

I now will be taking much needed break to recover from this amazing extroverted experience. Allowing my own autonomic nervous system to come back to baseline. ❤️🧠❤️🧠

We MUST do better in Sports. We MUST do better overall for these players and all patients who have a history of a concussion. Dr. Marshall does a wonderful job describing the pitfalls. In the first hit on Sunday, there were clear signs of neurological impairment. Stumbling and the inability to remain upright after a hit is a clear sign that a player should NOT return to play. They claim he passed the concussion protocol, but if this is the case the NFL needs to up their concussion game. When we take a hit to our energy stores (ATP from our mitochondria) and it does not recover for 3-4 weeks!! If another hit occurs during that time the recovery time nearly TRIPLES. Additionally, fatal and permanent injuries occur. Tua is very lucky he did not sustain Second Impact Syndrome. Tua took 2 significant hits in 4 days! On the second hit, he displayed a fencing response which indicated a very significant head injury.

We MUST do better in Sports. We MUST do better overall for these players and all patients who have a history of a concussion.

Neurodivergence, what does this term really mean??? I spent this past week in training and one of the teachers described that they think everyone is neurodivergent- I felt myself take a step back and began to wonder what is the true percentage of the population that can be described by this term. I felt a brush of a reaction to the statement almost as if they’d said WE ARE ALL NEURODIVERGENT equating to ALL LIVES MATTER.

In it sits our inner ableism.

The last week reminded me that I am excessively sensitive to noise.

That being in group environments puts me in a situation where I have to navigate multiple different styles of communication.

Having prolonged screen time increases my need for space.

That with these experiences comes a deep seated need for space. In order to manage dissociation, reactions, and my own masking.

Thus far 15-30% of the population is considered to be neurodiverse. This equates to approximately 1 in 7 people have a neurodivergent condition. With at least 70% of the population still being neurotypical. It occurred to me that though our world is filled with people with nervous systems of all different shapes and sizes. The word neurodivergent and neurodiversity has a very specific meaning that can not be applied as broadly.

This moment reminded me how important words are. The nuance can mean the difference between ableism and honoring someone’s experience. And that I am still actively engaged and learning how to meet myself and others in this space.

Some Definitions:
I would go further and break down into two forms of neurodiversity: innate and acquired.

Innate neurodiversity can include conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD/ADD, Tourette Syndrome, Dyspraxia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Dyslexia, other Learning Disabilities and Mental Health Disorders.

Acquired neurodiversity includes an illness or accident that leads to changes in the way you operate in your environment. This can occur through concussions or traumatic brain injuries, PTSD, chronic illness, and chronic pain. Though some of these conditions can make lasting changes they are not inborn traits like the list above.
