Our May class schedule is here 🌿

This time of year is one of our favorites - longer days, warmer weather, and a natural invitation to get moving again.

We’re continuing our full lineup of Beyond PT classes, including Slow Flow Yoga, Tai Chi for Better Balance, MELT, Essentrics, Onero, and Strength 3.0 - designed to support both repair and restore so you can keep doing what you love.

A quick scheduling note:
Andrea will be taking some time off, so Onero and Strength 3.0 classes on May 18 and during the week of Memorial Day will be canceled.

Otherwise, we’re here and rocking and rolling—ready to support you.

Ever feel like your body just won’t “turn off”?
Tight shoulders, shallow breathing, trouble relaxing - even when you want to.

That’s often your nervous system stuck in “fight or flight” mode.

The good news is, your body already has a built-in way to shift out of stress.

Your breath 🌿

Slow, steady breathing can help signal safety to your body and activate your “rest and restore” system 🤍

And sometimes it’s not just about taking a deep breath - it’s about learning where your breath is going.

In our clinic, we often use a technique called sectional breathing, using simple finger cues to help guide breath into different areas of the body - chest, ribs, back, and diaphragm. It’s a practical way to reconnect with your breath and ease areas that feel tight or restricted.

And when breathing doesn’t feel easy, physical therapy can help by improving how your body moves, releases tension, and supports more natural breathing patterns. 🩺

We put together a simple, practical guide to understanding and regulating your nervous system.

What We’re Loving This Month 💛 Vagus Nerve Deck by Reclaiming Melissa Romano

As we focus this month on regulating your nervous system - through breath, movement, and recovery - this deck is one of our favorite simple, practical tools.

The vagus nerve plays a key role in how your body responds to stress and returns to a state of calm. It helps regulate things like heart rate, digestion, and your ability to feel safe and connected.

What we love about this deck is how approachable it makes that process.

Each card falls into one of three categories:
🌿 Calm: helping your system slow down
⚡️ Vitality: gently bringing energy back in
👥 Connection: supporting social engagement and a sense of safety

You don’t need a full routine - just pull a card based on what your body needs in the moment.

✨ This deck is available in our Library if you’d like to explore it more.

Ask a PT 🩺
This month’s question: Why does my pain get worse when I’m stressed?

Liz Finley, MSPT explains:
"When you’re stressed, your body shifts into a “fight-or-flight” state, creating real, physical changes.
This can lead to increased muscle tension, heightened sensitivity to pain, and a cycle where pain and stress reinforce each other.
The goal is to help your body shift out of that heightened state, reducing pain intensity and improving how your body responds to movement and daily stress.
Simple strategies like breathing, mindfulness, and gentle positional work can help support this shift."

If your pain tends to flare with stress, it may be a sign your system needs more support. A physical therapist can help you better understand what’s happening and build a plan to improve how your body responds.

We’re so grateful to have Liz Finley as part of our team at Connect & Beyond. 💛

Liz brings a rare combination of depth, curiosity, and compassion to her work. Her path into physical therapy began as an injured All-American swimmer—but what’s evolved is a true specialty in helping people navigate chronic pain, complex spinal conditions, and the “it’s not getting better” moments.

She has an incredible ability to listen, to see the full picture, and to meet each person exactly where they are. From there, she blends gentle, highly skilled manual therapy with progressive movement—helping the body restore, adapt, and move with more ease.

Her advanced training spans Neural Manipulation, visceral work, cranial-sacral therapy, myofascial release, concussion management, and more—but what stands out most is how she uses that knowledge: thoughtfully, intentionally, and always centered around the person in front of her.

Liz, we’re so thankful for the care you bring to this community. ✨

Spring is here 🌱

This is the time of year when people naturally start doing more—longer walks, yard work, travel, getting back to routines that feel good.

But doing more only feels good when your body is ready for it.

Our Beyond PT classes are where restoration happens—helping you build strength, balance, mobility, and confidence in your body again.

✨ April schedule is live
✨ New courses starting next week: Alignment Yoga + Strength 2.0
✨ A range of options to meet you where you are:
Tai Chi, Slow Flow Yoga, MELT, Essentrics, Onero, and more.

Everything is guided, progression-based, and led by clinicians who understand how your body works—not just how it moves.

If you’ve been wondering where to start, this is a great month to try.

Spring in Oregon means getting back outside — gardening, hiking, longer walks, and tackling the projects winter postponed 🌿

But if your body isn’t ready, that first weekend can leave you feeling it.

A few things we remind people every spring:
• Start slower than you think you need to
• Warm up before longer activity
• Strength supports everyday movement (not just workouts)

We put together a simple guide on how to prepare your body for spring activities so you can enjoy the season without the setbacks.

In the Portland area, spring has a familiar rhythm. The rain eases a bit. The days stretch longer. Gardens start calling for attention, and trails begin filling with hikers again. After months of darker mornings and shorter days, many of us feel ready to move more. And then it happens. The first lon...

Welcome to a new monthly feature: Ask a PT 🩺

Each month, one of our physical therapists answers your questions — helping you better understand your body, movement, and recovery.

This month’s question:
How do I know if what I’m feeling is normal soreness or an injury?

Marie Long, PT explains:
Normal muscle soreness usually shows up 12–48 hours after a new or challenging activity. It often feels like general stiffness or tenderness and usually improves as you move and fades within a few days.
An injury is more likely if you notice sudden or sharp pain during activity, swelling, bruising, weakness, or pain that doesn’t improve after several days of rest.
If pain limits your ability to move normally or keeps getting worse instead of better, it’s a good idea to have it evaluated by a physical therapist.
