As we wrap up National Public Health Week, we'd like to share more about Environmental Health!

Environmental Health is a section within Public Health that protects and promotes the health of the community by providing inspection and licensing services to public facilities. We provide education in the areas of food safety, public pools, travelers' accommodations, and safe drinking water. We are responsible for the inspection and licensing of all food services, including restaurants, bed and breakfasts, mobile units, and temporary restaurants, such as food booths.

We contract inspect day care centers, school cafeterias, and the county jail kitchen. We are also responsible for licensing and inspections of tourist accommodations, including hotels, motels, organizational camps, recreational vehicle parks, and public swimming pools and spas. In addition, we monitor and assist small public drinking water systems.

Environmental Health follows up on complaints made by the public on the facilities that we license and inspect, including foodborne and waterborne illness.

That's not all! Environmental Health also investigates animal bites in county. Our focus is on Rabies; an infectious viral disease that affects the nervous system, which can make animals act in strange ways. Rabies is transmitted by a bite or saliva from a rabid animal, so it is important to seek treatment if an animal bites you. In Oregon, the main carrier of rabies are bats. All animal bites are reportable to our office for investigation.

With the above list, you might think we do it all, but we do not inspect farms, grocery stores, or mini marts. The Oregon Department of Agriculture licenses and inspects these facilities even though they may serve a some ready to eat foods.

We'd like to give a shout out to our hard-working Environmental Health staff, whose small but mighty team work every day to help keep our community safe.

🎉It's National Public Health Week! 🎉

We're recognizing the contributions of public health and highlighting the issues that are important to improve and protect the health and wellness of Tillamook County. Our public health team works across multiple program areas such as environmental health, WIC, home visiting, immunizations, STD’s, communicable disease, reproductive health, emergency preparedness, and community health.

We couldn't provide these important programs without the contributions from the front-line workers, our community partners and others, who through their own work and by participating in community health initiatives such as Tillamook County Wellness, improve access to healthcare, support access to physical activity, increase emergency preparedness, promote better health, and so much more.

This year’s theme, Ready. Set. Action! centers our focus on providing accessible healthcare to all and calls on each of us to look back at the progress we’ve made and look forward to the steps we need to take toward an even healthier future for Tillamook County.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet it remains one of the most commonly diagnosed. This month, we’re encouraging our community to take simple, proactive steps that can make a life changing difference.

💙 What to Keep in Mind:
• Screening saves lives. Regular screenings can detect precancerous polyps early, when treatment is most effective.
• Know your risk. Family history, age, and certain lifestyle factors can increase your risk. Talk with your healthcare provider about when you should begin screening.
• Pay attention to symptoms. Changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, abdominal discomfort, or blood in the stool should never be ignored.
• Healthy habits matter. A balanced diet, regular exercise, limiting alcohol, and avoiding to***co all support colon health.
• It’s not just an older adult issue. Rates of colorectal cancer in younger adults have been rising. Awareness and early action are key at every age.
Taking care of your health today can protect your tomorrow. If you have questions about screening or want to schedule an appointment today, our team at the Tillamook County Community Health Centers is here to support you.

March is National Nutrition Month. It's the perfect time to rethink what we put on our plates. Food won’t guarantee cancer prevention, but the right ingredients can support your body’s natural defenses in powerful ways.

From antioxidant rich veggies to fiber packed whole grains, small daily choices can add up to big, long term benefits. 💪

Curious which foods can help you build a more cancer smart plate? Take a look at the images below to discover simple, everyday ingredients you can start adding to your meals. You can also explore even more options at Foods That Fight Cancer - American Institute for Cancer Research.
