In this month’s episode, Registered Nurse Shelby Jenck, joins the Tillamook Today Podcast to talk about Diabetes and National Diabetes Awareness Month.

Our bodies turn the food we eat into sugar, which we use for energy. When sugar levels become too high, it can lead to diabetes. The pancreas, a small organ in the abdomen, produces insulin—a hormone that helps the body use sugar effectively. If the body doesn’t make enough insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or cannot use the insulin properly (Type 2 diabetes), sugar builds up in the blood. Diabetes occurs when blood sugar levels rise above normal.

There’s also something called prediabetes. This means your blood sugar is higher than normal, but not high enough to be called diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 1 in 3 American adults—that’s nearly 98 million people—have prediabetes. Most (80%) don’t even know it, because there are no clear symptoms. But here’s the good news: prediabetes can often be reversed!

Making healthy changes like eating better, cutting back on sugar, staying active, and talking to your doctor can help lower your risk of getting type 2 diabetes.

Want to know if you might have prediabetes? Take the quick quiz at doihaveprediabetes.org. If your score is 5 or higher, make an appointment with your healthcare provider.

For more tips and support, visit the Tillamook County Wellness page on Diabetes Prevention or call the Tillamook County Community Health Centers at (503) 842-3900 to schedule a visit.

November is Native American Heritage Month!
Tillamook County is situated on the ancestral land of several Native American tribes. Among them are the Tillamook, Nestucca, Siletz, Nechesne and Nehalem tribes. These tribes all have a rich history with coastal lands and the sea.

Native American communities face worse health outcomes such as a higher risk of injury, su***de, and chronic liver disease. Factors like trauma, violence, poverty, and discrimination increase the risk of substance use disorder and other health problems.

Repeated displacement and colonization have caused trauma. As a result, Native Americans also face cultural struggles with keeping their language and history alive. It is important to take this month to learn about Native American cultures, especially those whose lands are what we now call home.

------

We are participating in the The Great ShakeOut drill tomorrow, October 16th at 10:16AM, where we all will practice the DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON response to an earthquake. Now is the perfect time to review the steps we can take to stay safe during an earthquake.

As we continue our commitment to the health and safety of our community, it's essential that we also prepare for natural disasters like earthquakes. Here are four things you can do today to ensure you're ready and to help protect your family, friends, and community:

1. Download the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning App
In Oregon the ShakeAlert app can provide crucial early warnings when an earthquake is detected. Even a few seconds' notice can make a big difference, giving you time to shelter safely. Don't wait—download the app today.
https://www.usgs.gov/faqs/how-do-i-sign-shakealertr-earthquake-early-warning-system

2. Educate Yourself on Earthquake Preparedness
Understanding earthquake hazards is key to staying safe. Start by exploring articles, blogs, videos, and infographics to learn how to prepare. A great resource is the Earthquake Safety Checklist (FEMA B-526), which outlines steps you can take before, during, and after an earthquake.https://www.fema.gov/sites/default/files/documents/fema_b-526-eq-safety-checklist.pdf

3. Check for Tsunami Inundation Zones
Being in Oregon, it’s important to know whether you live in a tsunami inundation zone. In the event of an earthquake, remember to Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Once the shaking stops, grab your emergency go bag and follow evacuation signs to higher ground immediately.

4. Consider Earthquake Insurance
Did you know that standard insurance policies don’t cover earthquake damage? To protect your home and belongings, consider purchasing earthquake insurance. Click here to learn more about your options and ensure you're financially protected in the event of an earthquake.
