Autism is a pattern of differences in 3 key areas: language use, socialization, and interests & routines. What people tend to not realize is the wide range of traits that can fall into each area, leaving many Autistic kids undiagnosed and unsupported.

Let’s break these down:
1. Language use:
•Sing-song voice

2. Socialization:
•Practices play/interactions in advance
• Overshares personal info

3. Interest & Routines:
• Setting up/organizing play
• Hand/body posturing
• Strong memory for small details
• Visual inspection
• Teaches self academic concepts
•Sensitive to tags/clothing
•Body rocking
•Perfectionism

Comment “SIT” to find out which retained reflexes contribute to a child who is prone to sit in the W-position.

Some kids who often sit in the W-position may have retained Primitive Reflexes that can cause problems with core strength, joints, and muscle development.

If you have a child or student that frequently sits in the w-position, you may find them doing the following:

🤷‍♀️Tends to hunch over in their chair
🤷‍♀️Rocks in the chair
🤷‍♀️Lacks attention and focus
🤷‍♀️Can’t stay seated for long periods of time

Kids with one or more retained reflexes may compensate for the retention by sitting in the w-position or finding ways to support their body when uncomfortable.

To find out which reflexes are creating issues with w-sitting and lack of core strength, comment “SIT” and we’ll send you the link.

✨ Why do speech therapists use visual photos during therapy? Because pictures help bring language to life!

Visual supports give children something they can SEE while they are learning to listen, understand, and communicate. For many toddlers and early learners, visuals make directions clearer, reduce frustration, and encourage more communication, even before words fully develop.

We use visual photos to:
🧩 Support understanding of words and routines
🗣️ Encourage requesting, labeling, and early sentences
👀 Improve attention and joint engagement
💡 Build confidence and independence during communication

Visuals don’t replace speech! They SUPPORT speech by helping children feel successful while learning new skills.

Parents, you can try this at home by offering picture choices, pairing pictures with spoken words, and praising every communication attempt. Small supports can make BIG progress! 💜💚

💜 A LITTLE LOVE GOES A LONG WAY 💜

Nothing makes our hearts smile more than seeing kindness, connection, and confidence bloom throughout the day. My sweet Valentine’s Day surprise was a beautiful reminder that communication is more than words. It’s gestures, smiles, and meaningful moments that build trust and joy ✨🌹

In our ‘What is…?’ Series, we’re breaking down big concepts that shape a young person’s world — starting with this one.

Stimming is often misunderstood, yet it’s one of the most important ways many children regulate, communicate, and feel safe in their bodies. When adults truly get it, we respond with compassion instead of correction.

Today’s visual offers a clear, child-centred explanation you can share with families, colleagues, and classrooms.

If you’d like a deeper, easy-to-print version, check the footnote of the visual — you can download a free bite-size information sheet to use at home or school. Ensure you have LIKED the post.

Save this one for later and share with anyone who supports neurodivergent young people.

🌿 Exploring, Talking, and Learning! 🐞
Our speech session last week was all about BUGS! 🐜🦋🐝

We read Jacob’s Bug Collection and went on our own little “bug hunt.” Using our magnifying jars, we explored pretend insects while working on:
🔹 Descriptive language (big/small, colors, wings, legs)
🔹 Action words (crawl, fly, jump, buzz)
🔹 Sentence building (“I found a bee!” “I found a ladybug!”)
🔹 Turn taking and curiosity through play and discovery

We also incorporated AAC visual sentence strips to support expressive language and sentence formation. Learners practiced combining core words and fringe vocabulary to create phrases like “I see a spider,” and “I found a butterfly!” 🗣️💬

Hands on, themed activities like this help kids connect new words to real experiences, making learning fun, meaningful, and JOYFUL! 💛
