The biggest concern for any organization should be when their most passionate employees become quiet. When an employee approaches you with a health and safety concern, make it YOUR concern. Involve that person in the steps taken to abate any hazards and give credit, fully, to that person.
Top shelf health and safety programs are never successful solely on the knowledge of the Safety Director or Manager. They become successful by encouraging ownership by the employees. Encourage suggestions, help your maintenance department prioritize H&S work orders and more than anything else, follow-up with results, whether they are positive or negative with every single concern. That, more than anything else, is what makes a health and safety program credible.
