🎄 Season’s Greetings from House of Day Funeral Service 🎄

As we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, all of us at House of Day Funeral Service extend our warmest Christmas greetings to the families and community we are honored to serve.

Christmas is a season filled with reflection, remembrance, and renewed hope. For many, it is a joyful time of gathering, laughter, and cherished traditions. For others, this season may also bring tender moments of remembrance and longing for loved ones who are no longer physically present but forever remain in our hearts. During this sacred season, please know that you are not alone. We stand with you in compassion, care, and understanding.

We are deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in us throughout the year. It is our mission and privilege to walk alongside families with dignity, respect, and love during life’s most meaningful moments. Your confidence in House of Day means more to us than words can express.

As we celebrate the miracle of Christ’s birth, we pray that your home is filled with peace, your heart with comfort, and your spirit with hope. May this Christmas remind us all that light shines brightest in the darkness, love endures beyond loss, and faith carries us through every season.

From our House of Day family to yours, we wish you a Merry Christmas, a season of comfort and joy, and abundant blessings now and in the year to come.

We are honored to have been featured in The Toledo Journal highlighting House of Day’s Holiday Bereavement Dinner, an important part of our continued after-care services to the families we serve.

The holidays can be especially difficult for those who have experienced loss. Our Bereavement Dinner was created to provide comfort, remembrance, fellowship, and support for grieving families, reminding them that they are not alone beyond the day of service. Families gathered for a shared meal, uplifting music, and a space to reflect, heal, and honor their loved ones.

At House of Day, our commitment does not end with a funeral. We remain dedicated to walking alongside families with compassion, care, and community support long after arrangements are complete. This evening of remembrance reflects our heart for service and our mission to care for families in every season of life.

Thank you to every family who joined us and trusted us with their care.

Sherrie Rolynda McGinnis departed this life on November 27, 2025, at home, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on March 20, 1961, in Maplesville, Alabama, to the union of her parents, Terrie Lee Coleman and Juanita Etherly-Slater.

Sherrie's early years were spent in Gary, Indiana, before her family relocated to Monroe, Michigan. She attended Monroe High School, later moving to Toledo, Ohio, where she completed her education and proudly graduated from Scott High School.

After high school, Sherrie began working at Poor Clark's Barber Shop as an attendant and cashier—a job she truly loved. For a period of time, she also worked in housekeeping at the Knights Inn Hotel, where her strong work ethic and warm personality left a lasting impression. Sherrie later discovered her exceptional gift for sewing, becoming a master seamstress for Jobst Industries, where she dedicated many years of service until the company's closing. Her creativity also led her to work as a seamstress for several designers in South Bend, Indiana.

Sherrie was a woman of remarkable skill, creativity, and compassion. She opened and operated her own adult care facility, providing heartfelt care to those in need until health complications required her retirement. Caring for others came naturally to her; she possessed a deeply gentle and compassionate spirit.

Sherrie's joyful presence lit up every room she entered. She absolutely loved to laugh and had a gift for making others laugh right along with her. A true jokester at heart, Sherrie enjoyed telling jokes, teasing playfully, and bringing smiles to the faces of family, friends, and anyone blessed to be in her company. Her humor was infectious, her timing impeccable, and her laughter—full and genuine—will be dearly missed.

Her artistic talents were endless. Sherrie was an exceptional songstress with a voice like no other. She wrote and produced a gospel album titled End Time Revival, devoting herself fully to its creation and often keeping her children by her side in the studio. She also had a special talent for hair braiding—an art she performed with precision, patience, and love for friends, family, and community.

Sherrie loved acrylic painting, cross-stitching, and crocheting, and she spent years running a daycare in her home in South Bend, nurturing and guiding the children in her care. She also had a great passion for ballroom dancing. Whether gliding across the floor or swaying to the rhythm, dancing brought her immense joy and allowed her vibrant spirit to shine.

Sherrie's creativity extended far beyond the arts. She had a natural green thumb and took great joy in tending to her yard, planting beautiful flowers, and maintaining a magnificent plant room. Her baking—especially her unforgettable apple pie and zucchini bread—was cherished by many. She also operated a home remodeling business for several years, mastering nearly every skill imaginable... except electrical work, which she happily left to the professionals. Truly, Sherrie was a jack of all trades.

Sherrie is preceded in death by her father, Terrie Lee Coleman; her baby twin brother and sister, April and Christopher Coleman; her stepfather, Sidney E. Slater; her ex-husband, Bathea Hayward; her grandfather, LaGrant Etherly; her grandmother, Lotti Bell Mason-Etherly; and her step-grandmother, Mary Etherly.

Sherrie leaves to cherish her memory her loving mother, Juanita Slater; her children, Tamea Hayward, Melony (Derrick) Jones, and her heart and only son, James (Randi) McGinnis III; her sisters, Pamela Coleman and Maria Clint; and her brothers, Terrance (Jessica) Coleman, Derek Coleman, Daryl Coleman, Andre Coleman, and Caleb Coleman. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Trevon, Marchell, Marc Jr., Alliyah, Layla, Azari, James IV, Alexia, Khloe, and Kaisen; and three precious great-granddaughters, Kamarie, Ava, and Teionna.

Sherrie will also be fondly remembered by a host of nieces and nephews whom she cherished and loved dearly.

Above all, Sherrie loved spending time with her children and family. Her warmth, wisdom, humor, creativity, and compassion touched countless lives. She leaves behind a legacy of love, artistry, laughter, joy, and strength that will forever live in the hearts of all who knew her.

Learn About our History

Established in 1964 by James and Dorothy Day as Day Mortuary, 1325 Nebraska Avenue, near Junction Street. At that time, it was the beginning of the African American migration into, what was then, the Polish community. James and Dorothy's two children, Michael and Cassandra, grew up in the business and later joined their parents, after going to college to become funeral directors and embalmers. Today, they are the second generation of what now is 3 generations, with the addition of Julius M. Moore, licensed funeral director & embalmer, Michael Jr. now as a licensed funeral director and Brian Day, Sr. as an assistant director.

In 1975 Day Mortuary, became know as The House of Day Funeral Service. Fifteen years later, in 1990, construction was completed on our new 10,000 square foot facility located at 2550 Nebraska Avenue, in the heart of the University of Toledo corridor. With the new building we have been able to offer a beautiful facility, beautiful landscaping, more parking spaces, and on site casket selection room.

At The House of Day Funeral Service, you will find that our services are unmatched in quality. We create a beautiful picture of loved ones that you'll appreciate for years to come.
