Andrew “Big Smooth” Phenix, Jr. entered this earthly realm on March 5, 1944, in Extension, Louisiana, to the late Andrew Phenix, Sr. and Beatrice (Ridley) Phenix. He attended Locust Hill Baptist Church with his family in Extension, Louisiana. Recently, he privately accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. Hallelujah! He was educated in the Wisner-Gilbert School System. He was an honorably discharged Army veteran, serving in Korea as a heavy equipment driver and repairman. These skills served him well down through the years. His children and grandsons truly believed he could fix anything. He saved himself and them a lot of money over the years. They never let a repairman touch their vehicles until they consulted him first.

Andrew came to Toledo, Ohio in 1963 where he had other family members. He worked several jobs in Toledo until he was hired at Ford Motor Co. in Monroe, Michigan. He worked there until he retired in March 2004, after 37+ years. He truly enjoyed his retirement, tinkering with his 1957 Chevy and working in his yard. He enjoyed hanging with his buddies from the Blue Gill and visiting with his Ford Motor friends. Andrew never met a stranger and was loved by many because of his personality. He loved to joke with whoever he met. His famous words to younger family were “Be One” while holding up that pointer finger! They all knew what that meant and got a kick out of hearing him say it.

On Saturday, January 31, 2026, after a short illness, God sent his angels to take him home. Andrew was preceded in death by parents; Andrew Phenix, Sr. and Beatrice (Ridley) Phenix, grandparents; William Sr. and Ella Ridley, and Sullivan and Mary Berry Phenix; and siblings; Annie Phenix, Jessie Mae Blanson, Charity Phenix, Ambus Phenix, Charles Phenix and Bertha Wesley.

Andrew’s memory will live on in the hearts of his devoted wife of 50 years, Eva L. Phenix; daughter, Tiffany Ann Phenix of Toledo, OH; sons, Jason Phenix of Toledo, OH, and Ron (Toni) Jones of Lancaster, TX; grandsons, Tahj Blanks-Phenix and Jason A. Phenix of Toledo, OH; siblings, Jesse Phenix, Mary Phenix, and Bobbie Gipson of Toledo, OH, and Melvin Phenix and Linda DeGrate of Monroe, LA; in-laws, Jennett & Larry Waters, Sam & Gloria Blash, Mattie & Alger Coleman, Betty Mitchell, Lucy Stuckey, Bob Blash, Ruth Blash, Albert Blash, Tracy & Pam Blash, and Betty Blash, all residing in Georgia, Wilma Phenix of Toledo, OH, and Vernon Wesley and Wallace Gipson of Baton Rouge, LA. Learn About our History

Established in 1964 by James and Dorothy Day as Day Mortuary, 1325 Nebraska Avenue, near Junction Street. At that time, it was the beginning of the African American migration into, what was then, the Polish community. James and Dorothy's two children, Michael and Cassandra, grew up in the business and later joined their parents, after going to college to become funeral directors and embalmers. Today, they are the second generation of what now is 3 generations, with the addition of Julius M. Moore, licensed funeral director & embalmer, Michael Jr. now as a licensed funeral director and Brian Day, Sr. as an assistant director.

In 1975 Day Mortuary, became know as The House of Day Funeral Service. Fifteen years later, in 1990, construction was completed on our new 10,000 square foot facility located at 2550 Nebraska Avenue, in the heart of the University of Toledo corridor. With the new building we have been able to offer a beautiful facility, beautiful landscaping, more parking spaces, and on site casket selection room.

At The House of Day Funeral Service, you will find that our services are unmatched in quality. We create a beautiful picture of loved ones that you'll appreciate for years to come. No detail is overlooked, from our presentation, staff and the way we are in uniform, to the new and attractive automobiles that we provide. Everything that we do is done with you in mind. Helping you in any way we can with the loss of a loved one is our first priority. Our personal experience with loss, and our spiritual beliefs, help aid in our personal touch with each and every family we come in contact with.
