Sharon Jean Harris (née Laidig)
March 17, 1954 – January 3, 2026
Age 71, Toledo

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sharon Jean Harris, a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, on January 3, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on March 17, 1954, Sharon was the youngest of three children to George and Francis Laidig. She grew up with her sister Connie (Dave) Sancraint and brother David (Vanessa) Laidig.

Sharon married the love of her life, Bob Harris, and together they embraced adventure, frequently moving across the country and enjoying new beginnings. Sharon took immense pride in being a devoted homemaker to her five children: Robert (Christy) Harris, Samantha Harris, Jacob (Danielle) Harris, Lance (Susan) Harris, and Jeffrey (Lauren) Harris. Her greatest joy was her family, and she cherished her role as matriarch to her 17 grandchildren: Kennedy, Robert III, Bailey, Rylon, Lylah, Jacob II, Rhiannon, Cameron, Lance Jr., Riley, Jackson, George, Madison, Carson, Jeffrey Jr., Charleigh, and Paxton—each of whom she loved fiercely and proudly.

While her heart was always at home, Sharon enjoyed working outside the house from time to time. She found fulfillment in cleaning homes and wrapping seasonal gifts at the Lions Store. Known for her green thumb, Sharon filled her homes with vibrant plants and often nursed sick ones back to life for her family and friends.

Sharon wore her heart on her sleeve and lived with a deep-rooted faith. She shared the gospel with loved ones at just the right moments, offering comfort and inspiration. Her church family at Toledo Apostolic Christian Church held a special place in her heart, second only to her Lord and her family. Sharon delighted in holding her babies and grandbabies and treasured the blessing of babysitting each of her grandchildren over the years. Her love and guidance will forever be remembered.

She was the heart of her family—a true matriarch whose presence will be deeply missed, yet whose love and faith will continue to guide those she leaves behind. Sharon, we’ll “Chitty Chatty” with ya later.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, George and Francis Laidig, her husband, Bob Harris, and her daughter, Samantha Harris.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 8th, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service and luncheon at 12:00 p.m. at Toledo Apostolic Christian Church, 3730 Herr Rd, Sylvania, OH 43560.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Toledo Apostolic Christian Church.

James Edward Hughes, a beloved member of his community and a devoted family man, passed away on December 28, 2025, at Waterford at Levis Commons. Born on December 16, 1934, in St. Marys, Ohio, Jim's life was characterized by a strong commitment to faith, family, and service.

A proud High School graduate of Waite High School, Jim served honorably in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve during the Korean War. After finishing his military service, he dedicated many years as a sales clerk and assistant manager for Dean & Barry Paint, culminating his career working in the offices of the Lucas County Clerk of Court.

Jim's spiritual journey took a significant turn in the summer of 1964 when he attended a Billy Graham crusade with his brother, Frank, and their Uncle Bob and families. It was a life-altering moment that transformed his path as he embraced his faith and committed his life to Jesus Christ. His faith was further strengthened when he met his wife Dorothy through a mutual church friend, and they married on June 12, 1971. An active member of the Detroit Avenue Wesleyan and later First Alliance Church of Toledo, Jim contributed to his church community by helping with sponsored dinners, participating in the Gideon ministry to distribute Bibles, and regularly visiting nursing home residents and hospital patients. His humility, compassion, and fervent ability to pray made him a cherished figure among his peers.

Jim's heart was particularly known for its compassion, a quality he displayed even in the face of tremendous personal loss. He experienced the heartbreak of losing his son, Jeffery Allen Hughes, in a tragic auto accident while Jeff was serving in the United States Army stationed in Germany. Despite his own grief, Jim was seen comfortingly attending to others at his son's funeral—an enduring testament to his caring nature.

In addition to his compassionate spirit, Jim was a passionate sport enthusiast. He proudly cheered for The Ohio State Buckeyes, as well as the Cleveland Browns and Guardians (formerly known as the Indians). He also enjoyed the camaraderie of family gatherings, participating in their monthly Pinnacle card club with great enthusiasm.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy Joan (Spitler) Hughes; brother William Hughes and wife Ethel; stepson John Paul Campbell; grandchildren Mary Digby and husband Jared, Joel Campbell and wife Melissa; and great-grandchild Sloan.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Florence Margrete George Hughes; his brothers, Franklin Hughes (surviving wife Jeannine), Donald Hughes (surviving wife Betty), Raymond Hughes (surviving wife Juanita); his sister Doris Swartz and husband Jim; and his son, Jeffery Allen Hughes.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on January 2, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, Toledo, OH 43614. A funeral service celebrating Jim’s incredible life will take place at First Alliance Church of Toledo on January 3, 2026, beginning at 10:00 AM, followed by a burial at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park at 11:15 AM.

James Edward Hughes leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering faith that will be cherished by all who were fortunate to know him.

Donald Joseph “Joe” Conklin, age 89, of Toledo, Ohio, went home to be with his Lord on December 14, 2025, at Genacross Lutheran’s Wolf Creek Campus under hospice care, surrounded by his family.
Joe was born on May 26, 1936, in Toledo, Ohio, to Darrel and Nedra Conklin. He grew up in Toledo, where his father’s service in World War II meant his mother went to work outside the home and his older sister, Pat, helped care for him. Those early years shaped his deep appreciation for family and sacrifice. Joe loved and played many sports as a boy and young man, and he graduated from Woodward High School before earning his degree from the University of Toledo.
Joe proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He spent his professional life as an industrial engineer, most of it with DeVilbiss, where he was known for his steady work ethic and thoughtful approach to solving problems. After taking an early retirement, Joe began what became a beloved second career as a runner for the law firm Gallon, Takacs & Boissoneault. For more than 20 years he crisscrossed the city delivering documents and greeting people, making many friends along the way with his gentle smile and kind words.
More than any job title or achievement, Joe was proudest of his wife, his children, and his faith in God. He believed his spiritual gift was mercy, and he lived that out quietly but consistently—visiting those in prison and in nursing homes who needed compassion and a reminder that they were not forgotten. He was kind, gracious, and merciful, a “quiet extrovert” who always seemed to notice who in the room needed encouragement or a listening ear, and who loved making people feel loved.
Joe’s faith was the center of his life. He was an active and devoted member of Holland Free Methodist Church for many years. Over time he taught Sunday School, helped with the Youth Group, led music and congregational singing, participated in many cantatas, and served both on the Church Board and the Pastor’s Cabinet. He was also a co-founder of the radio station WPOS FM, later renamed Proclaim FM, and remained an active board member up until his passing. He was deeply comforted by the hope of heaven and was excited to be reunited with his son Tim and to see his Savior, Jesus, face to face.
A true Toledo sports fan, Joe loved supporting the University of Toledo teams and cheered faithfully for anything being shown on BCSN. He was especially proud to support his granddaughters’ tennis team at Toledo Christian, and he delighted in showing up to cheer others on.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Sue Ellen (Sautter) Conklin; his daughters, Betsy (Trevor) Hurner and Andrea (Jason) Witter; and his cherished grandchildren, Sautter and Ellie Hurner and June and Pearl Witter. He is also remembered by extended family and many dear friends whose lives were touched by his kindness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Darrel and Nedra Conklin; his sister, Pat Sterns; and his son, Tim Conklin.
Visitation will be held at Walter Funeral Home on Thursday, December 18, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and at Holland Free Methodist Church on Friday, December 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The funeral service, open to all, will be held at Holland Free Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 19. A brief graveside service for family members will follow. All are invited to return to Holland Free Methodist Church for a meal and time of fellowship following the funeral.
Joe’s family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care he received at Genacross Lutheran’s Wolf Creek Campus and from the Care 360 hospice staff, and for the many prayers and acts of kindness from friends and church family

Gary William Brockman, 81, of Toledo, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 14, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Gary was born on June 27, 1944, in Evansville, Indiana, to Charles and Dorthea Brockman.

Gary is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Jennie (Walden); his three children, Heather (Steve) Guckenberger, Amber Bernal, and Kevin Brockman; and his five beloved grandsons: Dakota (Sydney) Brockman, Garret Brockman, Jordan (Isabelle) Brockman, Iric (Anna) Zellar-Bernal, and Julian Bernal. He was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his first great-grandchild, expected any day. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dorthea Brockman, and his Aunt Olivia Hoffmann.

Gary married the love of his life, Jennie, in 1967. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati a year later with a degree in architecture. Among his professional accomplishments, one he was especially proud of was his work on the NASA facility in Sandusky, Ohio.

A man who valued gratitude and togetherness, Gary cherished time spent with family. Having everyone under one roof for the holidays brought him immense joy. His five grandsons were the pride of his life—something clearly reflected in his extensive Air Force wardrobe, worn in support of his two Airmen grandsons and their service to our country.

Gary devoted himself wholeheartedly to providing for his family. He made countless sacrifices, always ensuring that not only were their needs met, but that many of their wants were, too. He was always there to support anything and everything his family was involved in and only said, “No.” to Jennie once in 58 years! His happiest moments were spent caring for others, and his unwavering presence offered comfort and stability to all who relied on him.

Gary’s deep faith shaped his life and the lives of those around him. He taught his family to love God, to love others, and to pray in both joy and hardship. His kindness and generosity flowed naturally; he helped simply because it was the right thing to do and because he cared deeply for others. Throughout his life, he served faithfully in his church—as an usher, a Deacon, and in many unseen roles that humbly honored God and supported the community he loved.

He will be remembered for his quick quips, dry humor, and his entertainingly eccentric ties and socks, as well as his love for Ohio State and Bengals football, napping through NASCAR races, tiramisu, and Skyline Chili with a cold rootbeer.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Avenue, on Friday, November 28, 2025. The family will receive visitors at 1:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, or Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Alternatively, you may honor Gary’s memory by sharing a special meal with your loved ones—and ordering the best dessert available!
