You only have control over yourself. You may have had a difficult life depending on what you've been through. But you cannot change anyone else. If you see that you have some behaviors that are harmful to yourself or others, you can decide to change them. You can become a healthier version of yourself.

When you are dealing with someone that dispays narcissistic behavior, it can change the way you think about yourself and the world. You may start to have beliefs that you are not good enough when you make a mistake or when someone tells you no. You may think that you always have to be perfect and have to give in order to receive approval from others. You feel like you aren't allowed to have emotions or needs because they aren't important. You feel the need to try and fix everything. It can be exhausting. But you can become self-aware and make the necessary changes to heal!

Do you notice any of these patterns in others? What about yourself? Dealing with this type of behavior or acting like this toward others can have consequences.

Learning how to deal with someone that acts like this is important because this type of behavior can be damaging to a person’s self-esteem.

It may be difficult to recognize these behaviors in yourself, but it’s important to become more self aware so that you can have more meaningful relationships.

Your past is a part of who you are but is not where you are right now. Learn to embrace every part of yourself. Everyone makes mistakes.

If you feel like there are loose ends that need to be addressed from a past mistake, then deal with them. Holding onto guilt will lead to shame which will cause you harm in the long run. Use your past mistakes as an opportunity for self-improvement and growth.

Forgiveness means that you accept what happened and are willing to move past it and move on with your life rather than fixating on past events that cannot be changed.

Why is it so much easier to have compassion for others, but when it's time to cut yourself some slack, you are extra critical?

Everyone has something about themselves that they don’t like; that they're insecure about. It is the human condition to be imperfect, and feelings of failure and inadequacy are a universal experience. Your particular inadequacy is connected to so many things that you didn’t necessarily choose: your genes, your family history, life circumstances- things that were outside of your control.

Something you can do to foster self-compassion is think about what a friend would say to you in the moments you are being self-critical. Write a letter to yourself from the perspective of this friend focusing on the perceived inadequacy that you tend to judge yourself for. How would this person convey the compassion they feel for you when you judge yourself so harshly?

Anxious but not sure why? I hear this a lot as a therapist. Here are some common reasons.

Instead of trying to ignore those feelings or try to force them to go away, start to pay attention so that they can be resolved. If you learn to understand the source of your anxiety then you have a better chance of healing. If you distract and avoid, it will not magically get better.

Start to take some time to sit with what you’re feeling. Journaling is helpful because it allows you to organize your thoughts. Talking to a therapist or friend can also help. Tracking your moods daily is also helpful because you may learn that there are some patterns and you may be able to discover the source of your anxiety this way also. For example, if you’re noticing you feel anxious every Sunday night before the work week, work may be the culprit.

We mistakenly think that we have to have motivation before we do an activity. We feel like we can’t do those things because we’re lacking in motivation. And while we sometimes do have those spurts of motivation, it is not sustainable.

The fact is that our brains don’t work that way. Dopamine is the chemical in our brain that’s associated with feeling rewarded or motivated. Dopamine is responsible for how we feel pleasure. In order to access dopamine you must first do the thing. Getting started can help you keep moving and get the motivation that you’ve been missing.

Build small habits and choose something to act on. Start small and give yourself praise for doing that thing. Break tasks that you don’t want to do in smaller chunks of time. Do something you like for a few minutes followed by the activity you have to do for another few minutes. However be careful with procrastination. When you procrastinate and engage in activities you enjoy, you are reinforcing the bad behavior of procrastinating. Instead, if you are avoiding a task, sit in boredom and see how quickly you start working on the task you’ve been avoiding.

Try some of these things today, and see if this can help you get more internal motivation.

How often do you try to do any of these things to try and make yourself feel better about a situation? Deep down you know that you are wrong or that you hold some responsibility in what's happening, but you would rather deceive yourself to avoid those feelings of guilt.

It takes strength to admit our flaws and to face our weaknesses. But it's so much easier at times to shift the responsibility onto someone or something else. Understand that this will negatively impact your relationships with others and with yourself.

Start to act in alignment with what you value. Ask yourself if you are seeing the situation falsely and if you hold some responsibility or could be contributing to the problem. Start to take responsibility for what you have control over. Learn to be humble and be willing to change.
