THIS MESSAGE IS LONG, BUT PLEASE READ IT TO THE END!
OK People! If you are able enough to have a facebook account, you should be smart enough to follow 3 simple rules! DON'T CLICK, DON'T ANSWER AND DON'T CALL! We tell you this all the time but some just don't listen!
Last week, a homeowner in one of our senior communities here got a pop up on their computer screen saying the message was from "Microsoft" and their computer was infected. It showed an 800 number and instructed to call them right away.
RULE BREAKER NUMBER 3, they called the number and the person informed them that their computer was infected and that all the data on it would be lost unless they let them have remote access to clean it out.
Then they instructed them to write out a check and read off the checking account and routing number from the check.
After hanging up the phone, they realized that they might be getting scammed and called me for advise. I said "Hang Up, call your bank right away and freeze your account"! But it was too late, they had already withdrawn the funds. And, there is no way to get this money back!
For the hundreds time,
1. IRS NEVER PHONES to tell you that you owe them money!
2. Microsoft does not have the ability to pop up a message on your screen! (the message is a pop up scam and YOU got it because you clicked on a link on a web site, downloaded a file or opened a link in an email...JUST DON'T DO IT!)
3. Never hire a "contractor" that knocks on your door looking for work! We all live in "No Solicitor" Communities. If a stranger knocks on your door, call the police first then call your clubhouse and report a solicitor.
For heavens sake, stop clicking on links on websites and emails and never open an attachment unless you asked for it from a trusted source. Anyone can Spoof an email address!
This is a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LEARN!
