My mom said this and it really hit me deep. She said "I would rather adjust my life to your absence, than adjust my boundaries to accommodate your disrespect" and I thought that everyone should hear this. These words are a powerful reminder that setting boundaries is essential to maintaining our self-respect and emotional well-being. When we prioritize our own needs and set clear boundaries, we're not being selfish β we're being self-aware and taking care of ourselves.
It's a hard truth that not everyone will respect our boundaries, and that's okay. We can't control how others behave, but we can control how we respond to them. By setting boundaries, we're communicating our values and expectations clearly. We're saying, "I deserve respect, and I won't settle for anything less."
Adjusting our lives to accommodate disrespect can lead to resentment, anxiety, and burnout. On the other hand, adjusting our lives to someone's absence can be a liberating experience. It allows us to focus on nurturing positive relationships and prioritizing our own needs. These words can be a wake-up call for anyone who's struggling to set boundaries or prioritize their own well-being. It's never too late to start setting healthy boundaries and taking care of ourselves.
