Why Do People Mask Their ADHD?
ADHD masking often starts as a way to cope. Many with ADHD learn early on in their lives that their behavior is judged against certain expectations.
You may have been told to “try harder,” “sit still,” or “pay attention,” so hiding your natural traits becomes a way to avoid criticism or fit in.
As such, masking can continue into adulthood in both work and social settings, especially when individuals with ADHD fear being seen as unreliable or disorganized.
