Degenerative changes refer to the natural, age-related wear-and-tear of the spine, such as disc dehydration and the development of bone spurs. Spinal stenosis is a specific consequence of this degeneration, occurring when these structural changes cause the spinal canal to narrow, reducing the space available for nerves. A compressed nerve (or pinched nerve) is the direct result of this narrowing, where the spinal cord or nerve roots are physically squeezed, causing pain, numbness, or weakness in the limbs.
