🚨 Why Every Facility Needs an AED 🚨

When seconds matter, an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) can make the difference between life and death. Yet according to the 2023 CARES (Cardiac Arrest Registry for Enhanced Survival) Annual Report, only 11.7% of patients who suffered cardiac arrest in public had a bystander use an AED. That number should be much higher—and your facility can help change it.

Here are 3 ways AEDs help save lives:
1️⃣ Restarting the Heart – AEDs deliver a life-saving shock that can restore a normal heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest.
2️⃣ Easy to Use – With clear voice and visual prompts, AEDs guide anyone—even without medical training—through the process.
3️⃣ Buying Precious Time – AEDs bridge the gap until professional help arrives, dramatically increasing survival chances.

💡 At Kansas CPR, Inc., we go beyond training. We:
✅ Sell trusted AEDs from companies like Zoll and Defibtech, along with the supplies you need to keep them ready.
✅ Track expiration dates on pads and batteries so your AED is always in service.
✅ Offer essential add-ons like Stop the Bleed kits, first aid kits, pocket masks, gloves, and more—everything your team needs to respond.

Info from the American Heart Association

"Access to AEDs Act Supports Lifesaving Response to Cardiac Arrest in Schools

In March, the Access to AEDs Act was introduced on Capitol Hill. This bipartisan congressional legislation would help ensure schools, including faculty and students, are prepared and trained to respond in a time of crisis. This legislation would authorize a grant program to support CPR and AED training in K-12 schools; purchase AEDs for use in schools; foster new and existing community partnerships to promote the importance of defibrillation in schools; and create cardiac emergency response plans.

Cardiac arrest can strike at any time. About 7,000-23,000 youth under the age of 18 experience cardiac arrest annually, with student athletes being more than 3.5 times as likely than non-athletes.

This bill is endorsed by the American Heart Association, National Football League, Major League Baseball, National Hockey League, NBA, WNBA, NASCAR, Major League Soccer, and the NCAA. The National Alliance for Youth Sports, National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, American Federation of School Administrators, National Association of State EMS Officials and many other groups also support the bill.

To find out more about the Access to AEDs Act and become part of a Nation of Lifesavers, text ‘AED’ to 46839 and tell Congress to support this vital legislation."

A good read. Abdominal thrust (aka heimlich) requires limited training and no special equipment. If the person becomes unresponsive begin CPR.

Foreign body airway obstructions (FBAO) occur commonly and the use of an anti-choking suction device has been somewhat controversial.

Anecdotally people have reported to us that these devices work - but what does the data show?

Do these devices work and can they be successfully deployed during an emergency by non-medical bystanders?

A pilot study evaluated 51 participants (a combination of parents and kindergarten teachers) on their ability to use a device with only the manufacturer’s leaflet for instruction.

What were the findings?
Most participants were able to follow the steps in the leaflet.
- The weakest skill was securing the mask to the victim’s airway.
* 43.1% failed to do so with LifeVac
* 33.3% failed with DeCHOKER

There were a higher number of successful FBAO removal in a shorter time with LifeVac
* Lifevac: 82% success (1st min)
* DeCHOKER: 44% success (1st min)
* 67% using abdominal thrusts.

Fitting and keeping the mask on the victim seems to be the largest failure point in both devices used in the study.

So what is the takeaway? Should you run out to buy a device?
Well, like most medical devices, training should be provided before being used in an emergency. Incorporating a device in the FBAO lesson plan of a basic life support course may be beneficial.

What are your thoughts? Do you have any experience using one of the devices?

Note: Handtevy has no COI with either of these devices.
