We are proud to recognize Adriana Gonzalez, RN, 3E ICU, as Torrance Memorial’s March 2026 DAISY Award recipient.

Adriana cared for a patient who had just received a life-changing diagnosis. While providing excellent clinical care, she also supported the emotional needs of both the patient and his family during an incredibly difficult time.

When the patient asked if he could take a shower, something rarely possible in the ICU, Adriana found a way. Working with her manager and the care team, she arranged for him to safely shower in the Burn Unit. That small act made a tremendous difference, lifting his spirits and bringing comfort during a frightening moment.

Adriana’s compassion, advocacy, and dedication truly embody the spirit of the DAISY Award. Congratulations, Adriana, and thank you for the extraordinary care you provide.

The Daisy Award and the Reason is You award are proudly sponsored by the Torrance Memorial Foundation Young Physicians and Professionals Alliance.

Supporting families. Connecting communities.
Laura Short McIntire founded South Bay Families Connected (SBFC) to provide parents and youth with trusted resources on substance use, mental health, and overall wellness.

Through online videos, blogs, and free parent education events, SBFC empowers families to have meaningful conversations, reduce stigma, and help youth thrive.

“The Parent Chat has been a wonderful resource for me as we navigated elementary school, middle school and high school and all the unique challenges each of those stages brings into our lives,” says one parent participant. “It's a wonderful space where I feel safe to share concerns and challenges, seek advice from peers and get reassurance that I’m not alone.”

High blood pressure, preeclampsia, and an early arrival. Christina and Matthew’s journey with baby Isabella shows the life-saving care families can trust at Torrance Memorial.

“Dr. Abelson said I had one of the most severe preeclampsia cases he has seen. It rose so high, I had an emergency C-section,” Christina says. “Thankfully Isabella was just fine. Her heart rate and breathing were unaffected.”

When John and Evelyn Schmitt arrived at Torrance Memorial’s Emergency Department, they feared the worst. After multiple eye surgeries and a second retinal detachment, they were told Evelyn might lose her eye.

But Dr. Eileen Chang wasn’t ready to give up.

She took the time to listen, re-evaluate the situation, and personally connect the family with specialists. Today, Evelyn is receiving advanced care from a retina surgeon, with hope of preserving her vision.

John shared: “Dr. Chang truly puts her patients first and made a profound difference in our lives.”

Big impact can start with something small. When planning his Eagle Scout project, Brady Barrett chose to help restore habitat for the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly—a species once on the brink of extinction.

Working with the South Bay Parkland Conservancy and local volunteers, Brady helped transform a neglected area of Czuleger Park into part of a growing wildlife corridor supporting native plants and pollinators.

Brady’s passion for service doesn’t stop there. As a Torrance Memorial High School Volunteer, he’s also gaining firsthand experience in patient care—an experience that’s helping shape his dream of becoming a surgeon.

From protecting delicate ecosystems to supporting patients in the hospital, Brady is already making a difference in the South Bay community.

🎈 Meet the doctor who saves lives by day… and inflates celebrations by night.

This month’s MD Local spotlight features Jamie Kagihara, MD, a board-certified critical care pulmonologist at Torrance Memorial, and the creative force behind festive balloon garlands known around her Hollyglen neighborhood as “Dr. Balloons.”

When she’s not caring for critically ill patients in the ICU, Dr. Kagihara is busy raising two active boys, volunteering in her community and crafting colorful balloon displays for local celebrations (including a few at Torrance Memorial).

“Can I emphasize how great this community is? The people in Hollyglen have become our chosen family,” she says. “I want to be involved and contribute to the community in any way possible.”

Originally from Honolulu, Dr. Kagihara brings the calm, steady mindset she learned growing up in the Aloha State to some of medicine’s most intense moments—helping guide patients and families through critical care with compassion and expertise.

From the ICU to community parades, Dr. Kagihara shows that caring for others can take many forms.
Read her full story and learn how this South Bay physician balances medicine, family and a little creative flair.
