Sometimes the smallest moments can make the biggest difference.
In the Torrance Memorial NICU, a new program called Little Joys is helping parents connect with their babies in a powerful way—through reading.
For families facing long and emotional NICU stays, simply hearing a parent’s voice reading a story can help comfort newborns, support early brain development and create meaningful bonding moments when holding a baby may not be possible.

The program’s mobile lending library is supported by three local teens—one a former NICU baby herself—who want to bring comfort and connection to families navigating one of life’s most challenging experiences.
Because in the NICU, sometimes a quiet story shared between parent and child becomes a memory that lasts forever.
Read how Little Joys is bringing hope to families, one story at a time.

Is napping healthy — or harmful? According to Torrance Memorial sleep specialist Khalid M. Eltawil, MD, FAASM, the answer depends on timing, duration and your overall sleep habits. While short early-afternoon naps can help reduce sleep debt and improve alertness, frequent or long daytime naps may signal an underlying sleep disorder.

Learn how to nap the right way — and when it’s time to talk to a doctor.

To schedule an appointment with Dr. Eltawil or another Torrance Memorial sleep expert, call the Torrance Memorial Sleep Disorders Center at 310-517-8950.

Recovery often begins with a single moment of compassion.
At Torrance Memorial Medical Center, our Substance Use Navigator Program is changing how we care for patients struggling with addiction—connecting them to life-saving treatment, removing stigma, and guiding them toward recovery.

For Sharon Hartwig, that support made all the difference.
“There is no possible way—without a shadow of a doubt—that I would be sober without Carol and the care at Torrance Memorial. It saved my life. If not, I don’t think I would be sitting here today.”

Today, Sharon is sober, living in her own apartment, and rebuilding her life—thanks to the care and guidance she received from Substance Use Navigator Carol Dunne and the Torrance Memorial team.

Read her powerful story and learn how this program is helping patients find hope and healing.

Her patients adore her.
Her floor calls her their “queen.”
And now, she’s a DAISY Award honoree.

Congratulations to Young Oh, RN, 7W MS Oncology!

Young was recognized for her exceptional care, unwavering compassion, and the way she supports not just patients—but caregivers, too. One caregiver shared that Young’s encouragement inspired them to pursue nursing, calling her a true role model.

That’s the kind of impact that goes far beyond a single shift.
Thank you, Young, for being the reason we do what we do.

For 75 years, compassion has worn a blue jacket. 💙
The Volunteer Auxiliary at Torrance Memorial Medical Center has been a powerful force behind the scenes—raising more than $8 million to support patient care, operating the Gift Shop in Lundquist Tower, and organizing countless fundraisers that strengthen our hospital and community.

Today, more than 900 volunteers contribute over 115,000 hours of service each year—greeting visitors, supporting patients and families, and ensuring every person who walks through our doors feels cared for.

“Volunteering has been part of Torrance Memorial from the start,” says recently retired director of volunteer services, Mary Matson, reflecting on a legacy that includes milestones like the naming of the Healing Garden in honor of the Auxiliary.

Their impact isn’t measured only in dollars or hours—it’s measured in comfort, kindness, and community.
Join us in celebrating 75 years of service, dedication, and heart.

E-bikes are fast, fun and a great way to get around the South Bay — but local emergency departments are seeing a rise in preventable injuries.

“The 100% absolute most important thing is a helmet,” says emergency physician Dr. Kurt Hansen. “When you add a motor and speed, that’s where the danger to your brain comes in.”

With new California safety laws now in effect and nearly 40% of injuries involving riders under 18, education and supervision matter more than ever.

Before the next ride, take a minute to review these safety tips. A quick conversation today could prevent a life-changing injury tomorrow.

Torrance Memorial was honored to welcome medical students and faculty from Yamato University in Japan during their recent educational visit to the United States.

As part of a long-standing exchange that brings international students to our campus throughout the year, the visit gave first-year medical students the opportunity to learn alongside our physicians and clinical teams while gaining valuable insight into patient care in the U.S. healthcare system.

These experiences are designed to help future healthcare professionals strengthen their clinical understanding while also deepening their cultural awareness and global perspective on medicine.
We’re proud to share knowledge, foster international collaboration, and support the next generation of healthcare leaders from around the world.
