Seed oils are having a viral moment — often blamed for inflammation while alternatives like beef tallow are framed as “healthier.”

But when you look at the full body of research, the story is far more consistent:
✔️ Seed oils aren’t toxic
✔️ Omega-6 fats don’t cause inflammation in typical amounts
✔️ Replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat supports heart health

The bigger issue? Ultra-processed foods — not the oil you use at home.

Eating disorders affect millions of people and have one of the highest mortality rates of any mental health condition. Knowing how to support someone — what to say, what to avoid, and when to encourage professional care — can make a real difference.

The Torrance Memorial Eating Disorders Medical Unit provides acute care services for adolescents and young adults who are experiencing medical complications as a result of a severe eating disorder. Our program is designed for individuals who are too medically unstable to enter treatment at an outpatient or residential treatment program.

Healthcare doesn’t stop at the hospital doors.

At Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Community Health Workers like Llanet Renoj and Cassidy Castro are bridging the gap between medical care and real life — helping patients navigate food access, housing, transportation, insurance, and more.

By meeting patients where they are, advocating for their needs, and building trust over time, CHWs help turn crisis-driven care into long-term stability. Their work strengthens care teams, reduces repeat ER visits, and ensures patients leave the hospital with the tools they need to stay healthy.
Because world-class care isn’t just about treating a diagnosis — it’s about supporting the whole person.

On Valentine’s Day, Melanie Lundquist, Torrance Memorial’s most generous supporter and cherished friend of our organization, brought smiles, and something sweet, to care teams across Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

Melanie personally visited departments throughout the medical center, delivering beautifully decorated cupcakes adorned with red and pink hearts. The thoughtful gesture was a small token of her deep appreciation for the extraordinary dedication our physicians, nurses, and staff demonstrate every day.

As she met with team members, Melanie shared heartfelt words that reflect her profound respect for those on the front lines of care:

“Writing checks is easy. You are doing the hard work every day and night caring for our community. Thank you!”

Melanie’s generosity has helped transform Torrance Memorial in countless ways, but her presence and personal connection with staff serve as a powerful reminder that philanthropy is not just about giving, it’s about gratitude, partnership, and shared purpose.

Heart disease doesn’t usually announce itself—it builds quietly over time.

A coronary calcium score is a quick, non-invasive way to uncover hidden heart disease risk and help guide personalized prevention before symptoms appear.

“At Torrance Memorial, we use advanced imaging tools to detect risk early—when outcomes are dramatically better,” says cardiologist Gaurav Banka, MD.
Learn how calcium scoring may help you better understand your heart health.

February is American Heart Month

The good news? Improving your heart health doesn’t require hours at the gym or a total lifestyle overhaul.

Just 20 minutes a day—a walk, meal prep, stress relief, or checking your blood pressure—can make a meaningful difference over time.

Small steps. Stronger heart.
Which habit will you start today?

Black History Month is an important time to celebrate the contributions of Black Americans and also highlight the ongoing efforts to address health disparities in the community. Due to historical and systemic factors, Black men and women face higher risks for:
🔴 Hypertension and Heart Disease: Black Californians have the highest rates of hypertension among all racial and ethnic groups. Regular blood pressure checks and a heart-healthy diet are essential.
🔴 Diabetes and Its Complications: Early screenings and consistent blood glucose monitoring can reduce the risk of severe complications.
🔴 Cancer: African American women should consult their doctor to assess their breast cancer risk by age 30 and begin annual screenings at 40. Black men should also speak with their physicians about prostate cancer screening.
🔴 Maternal Health: Black mothers in Los Angeles County face a maternal death risk three times higher than other groups.

At Torrance Memorial, we are deeply committed to advancing health equity through:
✔️ Community outreach and partnerships for culturally responsive care and wellness education
✔️ A Health Equity Steering Committee to reduce disparities in care delivery
✔️ Data-driven efforts focused on Social Determinants of Health

Your health is your power—let’s honor Black History Month by prioritizing health and wellness.
