Yes- so much of our stress comes from our response. We can’t diminish the pain and the stress that others cause sometimes, but we do have control over the way we think, what our next steps are, and what boundaries we set in place. The stress may not be fully gone, but it does get drastically reduced and maybe moves from stress to a different emotion (sadness, grief, frustration, etc).
Changing our thinking and our responses does create a sense of freedom though, it allows us to become empowered to focus on our wants, needs, and well-being instead of just the stress of other people.
As we enter into the holiday season- remember where you find your peace and spend some time supporting yourself before getting bogged down with other peoples stress.
