Scar tissue in muscle is a dense, fibrous tissue that forms to repair damaged muscle fibers after an injury or surgery. This new tissue is less flexible and organized than healthy muscle, leading to potential issues like reduced range of motion, stiffness, pain, and decreased strength. It is a natural part of the healing process, but if the tissue becomes excessive or poorly aligned, it can cause chronic problems.
Massage helps scar tissue by breaking down fibrous adhesions, increasing blood flow to the area, and improving its flexibility and softness. This can lead to a flatter, more pliable scar, reduced inflammation and redness, and decreased pain and sensitivity. Massaging helps restore "slide and glide" between the scar and surrounding tissues, which is especially important if the scar has become adhered and restricted in movement.
