On November 11

1889: Washington Becomes 42nd State

1918: World War I Ends The armistice (a temporary cessation of hostilities) between the Allied nations and Germany was signed on the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" in a railway carriage in Compiègne, France, effectively ending the fighting in the "Great War".

1919: U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day to honor the veterans of WWI.

1921: The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia was dedicated during an Armistice Day ceremony, symbolizing the sacrifices of unidentified soldiers.

1954: Armistice Day Becomes Veterans Day After World War II and the Korean War, the U.S. Congress amended the Armistice Day Act, changing "Armistice" to "Veterans," to honor American veterans of all wars.
