This holiday season we are finding that many parents are concerned about helping their children get caught up in school.

With all the screen time during the pandemic, there has been an increase in nearsightedness (myopia) and also in eye coordination and eye movement/tracking problems. These can all contribute to difficulties in school, including difficulty getting caught up from missing so much school because of school closures. These vision problems can also contribute to reading and comprehension issues. If your child struggles with schoolwork – schedule an appointment so I can let you know if a correctable vision problem is contributing to your child’s difficulties.

Since the holiday shopping season has started, we thought you might like this year’s holiday toy list, to help you pick out great toys kids love that also help develop many of the visual skills required for reading and learning.

Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or if we can help in anyway.

Wishing you a very Happy Thanksgiving and a wonderful holiday season!

Once again, our request to the governor's office has been granted, with Governor Parson declaring the month of August as "Children's Vision and Learning Month" in the state of Missouri. We choose August because it is a great time to evaluate your child for hidden visual problems before the new school year starts.

According to the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD):

"The overall goal of this national observance is to help increase awareness among parents and educators on the prevalence of undiagnosed or misdiagnosed vision problems.

Due to the incomplete nature of in-school eye screenings, many vision problems can be missed completely or misdiagnosed as other conditions like ADHD.

Children who grow up with undiagnosed vision problems are often unaware that what they see is abnormal, and that means they don't know to ask for help. The yearly Vision & Learning Month campaign encourages parents to take their children in for a comprehensive vision exam every year.

Children with vision problems that are not diagnosed and treated may struggle in school and often go on to be adults with the same vision problems--children do not "grow out of" these difficulties."
