Here is a reliable source of information for confirmed EHV cases from the current outbreak. There are no confirmed cases in SC or GA or NC or TN at this time. We have not seen any suspected cases in this area as of today.
If you are worried about your horses, recommendations are stopping or limiting horse travel and monitoring re**al temperatures twice daily. Temperatures over 101.5F should be reported to your veterinarian immediately.
If you and your horses have not traveled and if none of the horses on your farm have traveled, your horses are not in danger from this outbreak.

Name brand omeprazole (Gastrogard and Ulcergard) is pricey but worth it. Compounded omeprazole paste or powder is less effective (or not effective at all) and is usually a waste of money. The reason lies in protecting the omeprazole so it makes it past the stomach where it can be absorbed and get to work. Read more here:

https://paulickreport.com/horse-care-category/compounded-omeprazole-may-be-cheaper-but-it-likely-doesnt-work-for-equine-ulcers?fbclid=IwdGRjcAN--6VleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZAo2NjI4NTY4Mzc5AAEewKkLCaUTKxS22YZNZ22fbkMBP9tKqVWb_EdBrrPDPr9ldRGgZGiV_n63c7g_aem_lPAHCzDCxponjOiAyHz2UA

Omeprazole for horses is "finicky" to manufacture, and studies have shown that compounded versions often don't maintain their potency

What's the big deal?๐ŸŽWe have all heard "No Hoof, No Horse" but we can look deeper than that!
Horse hooves can be imbalanced in several ways but one that is getting a lot of attention lately is called "Negative Palmar" or "Negative Plantar" hoof angles.
๐ŸŽWhy it's important: Negative hoof angles (when seen from the side) overload the soft tissues at the back of the leg and cause inflammation in the joints of the lower limb. Think flexor tendon strain and coffin joint pressure. The effects can also spread up the leg into the hamstring muscles, gluteal muscles, and sacroiliac joints or lumbar spine.
๐ŸŽWhat does it look like: From the outside, the dorsal (front) hoof wall looks convex or "bullnosed" instead of straight. When you look at the bottom of the hoof, you may notice a deep crevasse at the tip of the frog. On x-ray the tip of the coffin bone is further from the ground than the heels.
๐ŸŽHow do we treat it: Team work between your farrier and veterinarian can help proactively trim your horse's hooves so the the toe is lowered and the heel is preserved. Changing the trim may be all your horse needs to help correct the negative plantar angle. In some horses, further work is needed to support the caudal half of the hoof, encourage heel growth and protect the soft tissues. Addressing any pain the horse may have will make them much easier for your farrier to work on and help them be sound and happy under saddle!

Do you know what to do if your horse has a puncture wound? These injuries can look small on the outside but be very bad on the inside!

They may look harmless enough on the surface, but puncture wounds can lead to serious infections and other complications. But bacteria or other contaminants trapped inside the wound can cause infections that affect joints, tendons, bones or other structures.
