A new episode of the Practical Parenting podcast has been released. The Practical Parenting podcast is hosted by Theresa Nguyen, MD, MS, FAAP, Chair of Pediatrics at GBMC HealthCare, and co-host Krystina Wales.

The digital world can literally feel like its own world, with its own language and rules. The acceleration of tech advancement is so rapid it can be hard for parents to keep up, but we don’t necessarily need to have a firm grasp of every new app or development. The central thing we can do to help our children is to teach them to become good stewards and discerners of the media content designed to steal their attention.

Please join us in celebrating Jemal Jones, Security Officer II in Safety & Security, who was recognized by Gwendolyn Marshall for his calm, compassionate, and professional approach to patient care.

When a behavioral health patient became agitated and refused to return to her room, Jemal responded with patience and empathy. By speaking calmly and building trust, he was able to safely guide her back, help facilitate needed treatment, and support the nursing staff—all without injury or escalation.

Jemal demonstrates how thoughtful de-escalation and empathy can make a powerful difference in challenging situations.

After years of trying countless weight loss methods with little lasting success, one GBMC Comprehensive Obesity Management Program (COMP) patient knew something had to change. “It was a roller coaster of emotions,” Ashley shared. “Every time I lost a little weight, I gained it back—and then some. I was at my wits’ end.”

Encouraged by a friend who had gone through GBMC’s bariatric program, she finally made the call. What started as hesitation quickly turned into the best decision of her life.

Ashley went above and beyond for a long-stay patient with behavioral challenges by helping the patient wash his hair and feel cared for with dignity and respect. 💚 Her empathy and hands-on care provided meaningful comfort to a patient in need and deeply inspired her team.
