HOW TO COPE WITH COMPASSION FATIGUE: 8 TIPS FOR CAREGIVERS

Caregiving is an all-consuming responsibility, whether you’re doing hands-on personal care or managing care from a distance. That can put you at risk for compassion fatigue.

Compassion fatigue can be a side effect of caring for someone in need. It causes physical and emotional exhaustion and reduces the ability to empathize. It’s common in doctors, nurses, and other health professionals and is called secondary traumatic stress. You basically get stressed from continually helping or wanting to help others who are suffering.

If it’s not managed, compassion fatigue significantly worsens your health and well-being. It also reduces your ability to care for your older adult. You can’t be engaged, warm, and caring because you just don’t have it in you anymore. To protect yourself, it’s essential to learn good self-care strategies and coping techniques.

Got a call from a 70-year old woman needing help daily due to constant exhaustion and frequent severe coughing spells. She was fine before she got COVID a few months ago. Now even though she doesn’t have COVID any more, her body is not the same and she doesn’t know if it ever will be. The statistics call her “recovered.” Get vaccinated, folks. Get your booster. It’s the only way out of this.

A special client passed away today, five years to the day after she lost her husband. I’m not sure how to begin to thank Jill Rosner of Rosner Healthcare Navigation for her partnership in caring for Mrs S. Not long after starting service for this client, we realized the negative impact the lack of a concerned family member was having. We brought Jill onboard, and she was absolutely fantastic. She brought the client to doctor appointments and advocated for necessary treatment plans, she arranged for handymen for home repairs, she made sure the client’s grass was cut and snow was shoveled. She went with Mrs S on trips to the emergency room and made sure she got the treatment she needed, calling administrators when necessary to fight for our client. She brought Mrs S her favorite foods in her final days. She became Mrs S’s trusted friend and guardian angel. Thank you so much Jill.

Zero threshold / roll in shower.

Pedestal sink.

No reason to leave the home you love.
