Not all AC joint injuries require surgery—but in some cases, surgical reconstruction may be necessary to restore shoulder stability. In this video, Mark Clough, MD explains why Grade 3 and higher AC joint injuries can be controversial in treatment and how factors like activity level and athletic demands may influence whether surgery is recommended.

When the ligaments that stabilize the clavicle and shoulder blade are significantly injured, reconstructing those structures can help restore proper shoulder mechanics and support the muscles that power everyday movement and athletic performance.

At Towson Orthopaedic Associates, Dr. Clough and our orthopaedic specialists provide expert evaluation and treatment for shoulder injuries, helping patients return to the activities they love. Towson Orthopaedic Associates is proud to provide trusted orthopaedic care for Towson, Baltimore, Baltimore County, and surrounding communities.

Dr. Richard Winakur, MD discusses some of the most common knee conditions he evaluates and treats. One of the most frequently seen injuries is a torn meniscus, which can occur from activities that involve twisting motions such as skiing, running, or sudden changes in direction. In many cases, these injuries can be evaluated and treated effectively, and some may require arthroscopic surgery depending on the severity.

Dr. Richard Winakur also highlights knee arthritis as another common condition that can affect mobility and overall quality of life. Symptoms may include pain, stiffness, and loss of motion in the joint. Treatment options can range from physical therapy and medication to help manage symptoms, with knee replacement surgery sometimes considered when more conservative treatments are no longer effective.

At Towson Orthopaedic Associates, Dr. Richard Winakur, MD provides expert orthopaedic care and education for patients throughout Towson, Baltimore, Baltimore County, and surrounding communities.

When shoulder pain from a rotator cuff tear doesn’t improve with conservative care, surgical intervention may be the next step. At Towson Orthopaedic Associates, Dr. Mark Clough explains how arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery allows for a minimally invasive approach to repair damaged tendons, reduce pain, and restore shoulder function.

Using advanced arthroscopic techniques, Dr. Mark Clough performs surgery through small incisions with specialized instruments and a camera that provides a detailed view of the joint. This approach typically results in less tissue disruption, reduced postoperative discomfort, and a more efficient recovery process compared to traditional open procedures. The goal is always to help patients return to their daily activities safely and confidently.

Opening Day is around the corner, and when a power hitter is sidelined with a hamate fracture, many fans wonder how one small wrist bone can have such a significant impact on performance.

In Episode 3 of Inside the Injury, Dr. Elizabeth Langhammer and Dr. Alexander Adams of Towson Orthopaedic Associates explain why the hamate plays a critical role in grip strength and bat control—both essential for generating power at the plate.

Dr. Elizabeth Langhammer explains that the hook of the hamate acts as a pulley for the flexor tendons of the ring and small finger. When it fractures, grip strength can decline, directly affecting bat control and power. Even after surgical treatment, athletes typically regain about 90 to 95 percent of their grip strength. While that may seem minor, even small deficits can influence high-level performance.

Dr. Alexander Adams notes that diagnosing this injury can be challenging because the hook sits deep in the palm and is not always visible on standard wrist X-rays. If suspicion remains high, a specialized carpal tunnel view may be obtained, and a CT scan is considered the gold standard for confirming the fracture. Continuing to play through symptoms increases the risk of nonunion, meaning the bone may fail to heal properly, and nearby flexor tendons or the ulnar nerve can become irritated over time.

Early recognition and appropriate management are critical for hitters aiming to return safely and maintain peak performance. Towson Orthopaedic Associates is proudly serving Towson, Baltimore, Baltimore County, and surrounding communities with trusted orthopaedic expertise.

As Opening Day approaches and roster decisions take shape, hamate fractures are once again part of the baseball conversation.

In Episode 2 of our Inside the Injury series, Dr. Elizabeth Langhammer of Towson Orthopaedic Associates explains why this injury so commonly affects hitters. In baseball, hook of the hamate fractures almost always occur in the nondominant hand during the terminal phase of a swing. When the bat makes contact with the ball, force travels through the rigid handle directly into the palm—concentrating stress over the hook of the hamate.

Dr. Langhammer highlights how grip style, swing mechanics, and even check swings can significantly increase peak pressure on this small but critical wrist bone. Players may sustain an acute fracture from a single high-force event or develop a chronic stress injury from repetitive trauma over time—making hitters far more susceptible than pitchers or other position players.

At Towson Orthopaedic Associates, we are proudly serving Towson, Baltimore, Baltimore County, and surrounding communities with expert sports medicine care designed to keep athletes performing at their highest level.
