Making Halloween More Autism-Friendly 🎃

As we wrap up our week of tips, today we celebrate Halloween, a time for fun, creativity, and community!

🧡 Tip 5: Be Flexible and Celebrate Your Way
There’s no “right” way to do Halloween. What matters most is that your child feels comfortable, safe, and included.

✔️ Take breaks as needed and skip activities that feel overwhelming.
✔️ Celebrate at home with favorite snacks, movies, or decorations.
✔️ Focus on what brings joy, not what’s expected.

💙 At Springbrook Autism Behavioral Health, we believe that every child deserves to experience the magic of Halloween in a way that works best for them!

Wishing you a happy, safe, and sensory-friendly Halloween from all of us at Springbrook! 🎃💙

Making Halloween More Autism-Friendly 🎃

All week long, we’re sharing practical ways to help make Halloween a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for children and adolescents with autism.

🧡 Tip 4: Offer Alternative Treats
Traditional candy can be tricky for children with food allergies, dietary restrictions, or sensory sensitivities, but there are plenty of fun alternatives!

✔️ Consider non-food treats like stickers, bubbles, small toys, or glow sticks.
✔️ Offer a mix of options so every child can participate comfortably.
✔️ Look for teal pumpkins, they signal homes offering allergy-friendly treats.

💙 At Springbrook Autism Behavioral Health, we believe every child deserves to feel included and celebrated, especially on holidays like Halloween!

Stay tuned for more tips throughout the week on creating a sensory-friendly and inclusive Halloween!

🧡 Tip 3: Create a Sensory-Friendly Environment
Halloween can bring bright lights, loud noises, and unpredictable surprises, all of which may feel overwhelming for children with sensory sensitivities.

✔️ Keep decorations simple and non-flashing.
✔️ Choose quieter neighborhood events or trick-or-treat early.
✔️ Have noise-canceling headphones or a comfort item on hand.

💙 At Springbrook Autism Behavioral Health, we understand how small adjustments can make big differences helping every child enjoy the fun in ways that feel safe and comfortable for them.

🧡 Tip 2: Choose Comfortable Costumes
Costumes can look fun, but they can also feel itchy, tight, or overwhelming for children with sensory sensitivities.

✔️ Let your child help choose their costume.
✔️ Try it on ahead of time to check comfort and fit.
✔️ If needed, adapt familiar clothing with festive accessories instead of a full costume.

💙 At Springbrook Autism Behavioral Health, we understand that comfort and choice go a long way in helping every child feel included and confident during the Halloween fun!

Making Halloween More Autism-Friendly 🎃

All week long, we’re sharing simple, practical ways to help make Halloween a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for children and adolescents with autism.

🧡 Tip 1: Prepare for What’s Ahead
Talk with your child about what Halloween is and what to expect. Walk through the plan together, use visuals or social stories, and practice saying “trick or treat” (or another greeting) to help them feel confident and ready.

💙 At Springbrook Autism Behavioral Health, we understand that every child experiences the world differently. With preparation and understanding, Halloween can be both fun and comfortable for everyone!

This October, during National Bullying Prevention Month, Springbrook Autism Behavioral Health emphasizes that prevention begins with understanding!

For children and adolescents with autism and developmental differences, bullying can take many forms, from social exclusion and teasing to misunderstandings of sensory or communication needs. Every act of kindness and inclusion makes a difference.

This month, we’re committed to:
✔️ Promoting acceptance and empathy
✔️ Encouraging positive behavioral supports
✔️ Helping youth with autism build confidence and self-advocacy

Every child deserves a place where they feel safe, accepted, and free to be themselves! 💙🧩🦋
