“I want to take a moment to address something openly.

Recently, someone called DHEC with concerns about my home care business. They spoke to me, completed their inspection, and found nothing wrong. I’m proud to say I was told directly that I am not doing anything improper. To whoever called, thank you for your concern but please know, my heart and my business are rooted in helping people. I take pride in doing things the right way and following every standard that keeps my clients safe and cared for.

At the end of the day, there are much bigger things to worry about in this world than trying to tear down someone who is simply trying to serve their community.

My focus will stay right where it belongs: on the families I care for and the difference I can make in their lives.

***I also want to add that I have never offered services for Medicaid or Medicare clients, all of my clients have been self-pay and the families have been aware of and comfortable with me, and the services I have offered, that follow home care service guidelines. I do not have a “home care facility” I do self-pay clients, as needed. I’m a full time nursing student and do home care as needed for families that need companionship, light-house keeping & help with their loved one. I am not and have never advertised or told anyone I am a RN, and that I provide medication or medical needs. I just want to be clear about that, as some have speculated differently. I had the option to move my LLC, as non-active however I decided to keep it active as I have worked hard for what I have now, and will not close down something I’m passionate about due to one complaint.

Whether it’s helping with daily routines or simply being a compassionate presence, our goal is to preserve independence and uphold dignity in every moment.

Here are some tips to help your loved one feel more independent:

1. Encourage Choice: Let them make decisions about their daily routine—what to wear, what to eat, or how to spend their time. Even small choices foster a sense of control.

2. Adapt the Environment: Make their home safer and more accessible with grab bars, non-slip mats, and easy-to-reach items. Independence often starts with thoughtful design.

3. Promote Self-Care: Support them in doing tasks themselves, even if it takes longer. Assist only when needed and celebrate their efforts.

4. Use Assistive Tools: Introduce helpful devices like walkers, medication organizers, or voice-activated lights. These tools empower—not replace—their abilities.

When my sweet Papa was living with dementia, supporting his independence while honoring his dignity was always at the center of the care I provided. Even in the moments when his memory would slip or his confusion would rise, I made it a point to never make him feel less than. I encouraged him to do the things he was still capable of, whether it was choosing his clothes, helping with simple tasks, or just having a say in what he wanted to eat because I knew that those small decisions helped him feel like himself. I never rushed him, never corrected him harshly, and always spoke to him with the same respect and gentleness I would want for myself. Dementia may have changed how he interacted with the world, but it never changed his worth. Caring for him taught me more about how dignity lives in how we treat someone, especially when they are most vulnerable.
