Herd dynamics are present 24/7. As prey animals, horses are most vulnerable when laying down. When one or more of the herd members are resting, there is always one holding space where their role is to guard, and be aware of lurking threats. In this moment, Lovie is embracing this role in order for Willow to relax & enter her parasympathetic state.

Turns out horses do a little acoustic magic when they whinny. 🐎
For a long time, scientists believed animal voices followed a simple rule: the bigger the animal, the deeper the sound. A large animal like a horse has a larger larynx, so naturally they would make lower frequency sounds than a smaller animal like a cat. But researchers are learning that animal voices are more complex than just based on body size.
A new study shows that a whinny is a particularly unusual vocalization creating two sounds simultaneously. One is a deep rumble created by the vocal cords and the other a high pitched whistle. The surprising part is how high that whistle frequency can be and scientists still aren’t completely sure how horses produce it.
Why horses evolved to produce this dual vocalzation is also a mystery. One idea is that this double sound evolved so horses could send more than one message to the herd at the same time.
So next time your horse calls to you he maybe telling you two things at once - whether thats good or bad or a combination of both, we'll leave up to you to decide. 🐴 😉
