PRESS RELEASE:

Thunder Bay Community Health Service and Munson Healthcare Announce Partnership to Expand Prenatal Care Access in Northern Michigan

Thunder Bay Community Health Service (TBCHS) and Munson Healthcare are proud to announce a new partnership aimed at expanding access to prenatal care for families across Northern Michigan. With much of the TBCHS service area designated as a maternity care desert, many expecting mothers currently face travel times of an hour or more to receive prenatal services. This collaboration seeks to bring high-quality, local care closer to home.

“This collaboration will help eliminate barriers to care we see so often here in Northern Michigan. Providing quality prenatal care close to home sets our region’s babies up for a healthier future,” said Richard Bates, MD, CPE, CEO of TBCHS and long time OB/GYN in Northern Michigan. The organization provides services in Cheboygan, Montmorency, Oscoda, Otsego, and Presque Isle counties, serving nearly 20,000 patients annually.

Through the partnership, patients will be able to receive routine prenatal care at the TBCHS Atlanta Clinic and Rogers City Clinic, located in Montmorency and Presque Isle County. Care will be provided by Brendan Conboy, MD, a board-certified OB/GYN with extensive experience in women’s health. “By providing routine prenatal care locally and partnering with Munson Healthcare for delivery, we are improving access, strengthening continuity of care, and supporting healthier outcomes for mothers and babies across Northern Michigan.”

Patients will transition their care to Munson Healthcare once they reach 36 weeks of pregnancy, ensuring a seamless transfer and a coordinated birth plan supported by Munson’s regional obstetric care teams.

“Our partnership with Thunder Bay Community Health Service reflects Munson Healthcare’s commitment to meeting families where they are and expanding access to high-quality care across Northern Michigan,” said Kirsten Korth-White, East Region President, Munson Healthcare. “By bringing routine prenatal services closer to home and ensuring a smooth transition into our birthing centers, we are helping remove longstanding barriers so that every baby, mother and family has the support and care they deserve.”

Initially, deliveries will take place at Munson Healthcare Grayling Hospital. Starting in Fall 2026, families will deliver at the new, state-of-the-art birthing center at Munson Healthcare Otsego Memorial Hospital in Ga***rd.

“Continuity of care is one of the most important factors in promoting healthy pregnancies,” said Kevin Omilusik, MD, East Region Chief Medical Officer, Munson Healthcare. “By collaborating with Thunder Bay Community Health Service, we’re ensuring that patients receive local, relationship-based prenatal care from a dedicated team that knows them and understands their needs.”

Together, TBCHS and Munson Healthcare are strengthening maternal health services, expanding prenatal care access, and supporting healthier outcomes for families across Northern Michigan.

We’re honored to announce that Munson Healthcare’s Cowell Family Cancer Center has earned national accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Re**al Cancer (NAPRC)—a designation held by only a select group of hospitals across the country.

The accreditation highlights the strength of our full multidisciplinary re**al cancer team—including three fellowship-trained colore**al surgeons, along with experts across oncology, pathology, radiology nursing, and supportive care—all working together to provide exceptional, evidence-based care that improves outcomes and quality of life for our patients.

We’re incredibly proud of this team and how hard they work to bring this level of cancer care close to home in Northern Michigan.

Learn more about what this accreditation means for our patients: https://www.munsonhealthcare.org/about-the-system/news-media-relations/news/munsons-cowell-family-cancer-center-announces

March is Colore**al Cancer Awareness Month. If you’re 45 or older or have additional risk factors such as a family history of colore**al cancer, a personal history of polyps, or concerning symptoms, talk with your primary care provider about the screening approach that’s right for you. Your P*P can help determine whether a colonoscopy is recommended and provide a referral.

Celebrating One of Our Everyday Heroes

Please join us in congratulating one of this year’s Hometown Heroes: Ashley Ochoa, Coordinator of Coding Operations at the Cowell Family Cancer Center.

Ashley was recognized by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for creating Fuel for Recovery, a program that ensures patients facing long treatment days have access to nutritious meals and personalized support when they need it most. Since its launch, the program has already provided hundreds of meals—a true reflection of her compassion and dedication.

Her achievement continues a long tradition of Munson Healthcare employees stepping up for their communities. From past Hometown Health Hero recipients like Paul Bock and Tammie Budrow, to the countless team members who quietly go above and beyond each day, our people have always been the heart of our mission.

We are incredibly proud of Ashley for carrying this legacy forward and for strengthening the culture of kindness, innovation, and service that defines Munson Healthcare.

Congratulations, Ashley, and thank you for all you do for our patients and our region.

Thank You to Our Munson Team.

When winter weather hits hard, many other services and major employers can shut down operations or cancel classes, telling people to stay home. However, healthcare workers are essential workers who saved lives over the last couple days by coming into work. These valiant efforts don’t go unnoticed, and we are grateful for the dedication of our teams.

We were able to keep all our hospitals open 24/7 because people stepped up in big and small ways. We facilitated transportation for employees to get to their jobs; we had employees staying overnight to ensure they were here the next day; we had employees and managers picking up extra shifts; people helped with food service when this wasn’t their normal role; we made do through power outages; and we even had people directing traffic when semi-trucks delivering supplies got stuck near our Charlevoix hospital campus.

We also want to thank local governments and partners for the coordination, care, snow plowing, and other support rendered throughout the last few days to clear the way for our patients and coworkers to be here. We even had a snowplow “escorting” one of our ambulances, safely clearing the way for a patient to make it to one of our facilities! This week, our community and this healthcare team truly showed up when it mattered most.

Thank you again for your service and working to improve lives every day.

"Working at Munson means being part of a team that carries the responsibility of providing most of the healthcare for Northern Michigan. It means giving our communities the quickest and most reliable access to high-quality care.

What I love most about my role is having the privilege of leading the incredible nursing team on Munson Medical Center’s B4 unit. This team is remarkable, not just in skill, but in heart. No matter the situation or the strain we may face, we consistently pull together in truly inspiring ways. Every patient that arrives on our floor deserves a team that is fully invested in their care, and that’s exactly what this group delivers.

Some days are busier than others, but this team never lets the ship drift off course. When challenges arise, everyone grabs an oar and rows in unison. That level of unity, grit, and commitment is rare, and it’s something I’m deeply proud to be a part of. Leading them isn’t just a responsibility, it’s an honor I genuinely love to my core.

One priority I’m especially committed to is nurturing the future of nursing within our community. My dedication lies in creating a space where new nurses feel empowered to learn and supported to advocate for their patients. Every new nurse who walks onto our floor represents someone who will one day comfort our families and elevate the standard of care. By investing in them, we are investing in the strength and resilience of the future of healthcare in Northern Michigan." —George Bullard, BSN, RN, Nurse Manager, Munson Medical Center
