Yoga Vidya North Iyengar yoga in Traverse City, MI I wasn't born flexible &
I certainly could never stand on my head. I then knew what asana {posture} practice would teach me.

Coreene received her certification in the Iyengar tradition in 2014 and she continues regular study under the guidance of Senior teachers Mary Reilly {North Woods Yoga} and Sue Salaniuk {The Yoga Space}

When she's not on her mat, Coreene is the owner and photographer of Tavla Studio in Traverse City, MI

Words from Coreene:

I was never the athlete. But in my first Iyengar yoga class with Mary Reilly, she spoke about Tadasana {mountain pose} & it's relation to the practice of non-judgment. I wasn't here to be skinny or to get flexible. I was here to teach my body, this vessel which houses my spirit, to be a tool to connect deeper into my own soul. Shanti, Sneha, AUM ~ Coreene

Level I Beginning Iyengar Yoga -
Level I Yoga focuses on realigning the body through asanas {postures}. Asanas are done safely with the use of props (if needed) for correct body alignment. Strength, subtle muscle action, flexibility & focus are built with basic standing poses, seated forward bends, twists, supported inversions, and supported backbends. It is advisable to not eat a full meal at least 2 hours before practicing.

Restorative Yoga -
Restorative yoga seeks to achieve physical, mental and emotional relaxation with the aid of props. A deeper mind-body connection is also built through pranayama {breath control}. The use of props aids in maintaining balance while focusing and relaxing. This class is suitable for all ages and abilities. Remembering Guruji one year after he left the physical world. Beautiful previously unseen photographs at the link.
"You will not reach knowledge of the Divine Self without passing through Self-knowledge. Your practice is your laboratory, and your methods must become ever more penetrating and sophisticated. Whether you are in asana or doing pranayama, the awareness of the body extends outwards, but the senses of perception, mind and intelligence should be drawn inward.” - BKS Iyengar

Beautiful photos showing the power & integrity of Iyengar yoga during Guruji's last photoshoot at 95. I love the photos showing inside his institute & the path Guruji left for us to follow.

If you've ever done suspension yoga, that came from Iyengar's use of ropes; If you've ever used a prop, that came from Iyengar helping students achieve inner peace in a posture; If you've ever done a supported restorative practice, that came from Iyengar's belief in a balanced practice & the healing power of asana. He's a part of your practice even if you've never practiced Iyengar yoga.

Legendary yoga guru BKS Iyengar passed away at 95 in August last year. Quite a miracle, when you consider his history — born in 1918 during an influenza epidemic, he was a weak, malnourished chi

The New York Times recently wrote an article about Mr. Iyengar & how he changed the face of the modern yoga practice. You can read it here: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/11/world/asia/making-yoga-an-exercise-in-democracy.html?_r=0

And I love that they highlight this quote by him, which sums up why we practice so very well: “How can you know God if you don’t know your own big toe?”

Yoga was long the preserve of India's highest-caste men, the Brahmins. Thanks to B.K.S. Iyengar, it is the preserve of women and has spread to foreigners.
