As an eternal artist of life, Julie has found a balanced existence between supporting health and wellbeing in her community, and freedom within herself. A Thai Yoga Practitioner since 2008 and Massage Therapist since 2003, she has substantial knowledge of the structure and function of the body, from the superficial muscular layer to the energetic systems. This knowledge is demonstrated in her teachings as a supportive connection with her students and clients, allowing them growth through bodywork. In 2010 she received her 200 hour yoga certification from Sandra Carden at Union Yoga in Lake Leelanau, and completed her 500 hour certification in October of 2016. As a connected and dedicated student, her study of the science and philosophy of yoga and Thai Yoga Therapy is continuously evolving. She believes that yoga is an ongoing process, without limits and without an endpoint. Julie was initially trained in Swedish relaxation massage and specialized first in prenatal massage, honoring her background in doula and midwifery services. After continuously coming in contact with people with chronic pain and acute injuries her studies broadened to include Medical Massage and was then drawn to Traditional Thai Yoga as an aid in injury rehabilitation, chronic pain relief and to work with athletes more efficiently. Utilizing knowledge of antagonist and protagonist muscle groups, trigger points and stretching allow a release of localized stagnation of energy, toxins and lactic acid in muscle fibers and increase the range of motion of joints and muscles. With a keen awareness of the mind-body connection, her work is effective in addressing the stresses in the mind as well as the physical body. Julie is the sole proprietor of Thai Yoga Bodywork, LLC and the co-founder of Yoga on the Beach, a program offering donation based beach yoga in Grand Traverse and Leelanau County for the support of local environmental organizations. She is also a mom of two amazing young men, and an artist who uses many different mediums but is best known for her work with glass. She finds inspiration in everyday objects and events, often using her knowledge and appreciation of the human form to create pieces of art.

At the end of this full day of massages, I feel tired yet content and very grateful. I am grateful for each opportunity to share in the beautiful ancient practice of Thai Yoga Massage. It is truly a gift to share in this work. Opening the body and its energetic channels helps one open themselves up to their own potential, deeper perspective and possibility. Namaste my friends.

Back by Popular Demand: Thai Yoga Yin Workshop!

In this workshop we will discuss the basic principles of Thai Yoga Massage, also called nuad boran or Thai Yoga Therapy and how its roots began in Ayurvedic Medicine. We will also learn about the characteristics of a proprietary blend of medicinal herbs used in Thai herbal compresses called Luk Pro Kob that have been used in Thailand for hundreds of years for their therapeutic properties on the body. The latter portion of the workshop, Julie will guide you through a Yin style yoga practice adding adjustments and compression using the Thai Luk Pro Kob herbal treatments. This powerful workshop will facilitate the body to let go and create space where tension has prevailed. Through the combination of meditative breath, conscious movement and steamed medicinal herbs, this class will be sure to have an invigorating, relaxing and detoxifying effect on the body and mind. Holding lengthening asanas for 3-6 minutes allows space to be created within the muscle as well as the connective tissue and ligaments. This, in combination with meditative breath, compression done with steamed medicinal herbal compresses and adjustments done by a skilled Thai Yoga Therapist makes for an expanding, relaxing, rejuvenating experience.

This workshop takes place at Yen Yoga on Saturday, March 8 from 1:30-3:30 and March 9 from 3-5pm. Sign up is on the Yen Yoga website and cost is $25! I hope to see you all!
