Big news for advanced practice nurses in New Jersey!

On March 30, 2026, Governor Mikie Sherrill signed legislation eliminating certain practice restrictions for advanced practice nurses.

This legislation makes permanent independent practice authority for APNs providing primary or behavioral health care and allows qualifying APNs to prescribe medications without a collaborating physician.

On February 26, the American Nurses Association (ANA) formally submitted a comment letter to the U.S. Department of Education urging the classification of post-baccalaureate nursing degrees as professional degrees as part of federal graduate student loan provisions in H.R. 1.

This effort is critical to protecting access to advanced nursing education and ensuring a strong pipeline of nurses in advanced practice, education, and research roles.

In a recent interview, NJSNA President Peggy Daingerfield highlighted projections that New Jersey could need 24,000 additional nurses by 2036 to meet the healthcare needs of residents.
