⚡️ Hear me out — if you’ve been denied NJ SNAP before, it might not be the final answer.

Many seniors and people with disabilities in Mercer County, New Jersey are feeling the strain of rising grocery costs. The support is there — but the process can feel confusing and frustrating.

Missing paperwork. Unclear income rules. Applications submitted without all required documents. Small issues can lead to denials.

That’s exactly why our NJ SNAP Navigators exist.

Yvette recently hosted a table at a senior center in Trenton, offering SNAP information and on-the-spot pre-screenings so individuals could understand their eligibility before applying.

Be confident your application is set up correctly. If you’ve been previously denied NJ SNAP, reach out. We can review your application with you, answer your questions, and help ensure everything is completed accurately before you resubmit.

If you live in Mercer County or Hunterdon County, NJ and need support accessing food benefits, our services are free and available to people with disabilities and older adults.

As part of Black History Month, we continue highlighting prominent Black leaders who also lived with disabilities—an important part of their stories that is often overlooked.

This week, we honor Fannie Lou Hamer.

Fannie Lou Hamer was a nationally recognized civil rights leader and voting rights activist who played a key role in advancing access to the ballot for Black Americans. As a leader in the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, she challenged voter suppression and brought national attention to the realities faced by Black communities in the South.

Fannie Lou Hamer lived with the lasting effects of polio, which caused a permanent limp, and later survived severe physical violence for her activism. Despite these barriers, she continued organizing, speaking, and advocating for justice throughout her life.

By honoring leaders like Fannie Lou Hamer, we recognize that disability has always been part of leadership, resistance, and social change.

At the Progressive Center for Independent Living, we are committed to advancing equity, access, and independence for people with disabilities in Mercer County, Hunterdon County, and across New Jersey.

She thought the permit exam was the obstacle.

It wasn’t.

When “D” joined PCIL’s Drive-Ability program, she already understood much of the material. What truly stood in her way wasn’t knowledge — it was confidence.

She hesitated to raise her hand.
She second-guessed her answers.
She wasn’t sure she was capable of passing.

In a supportive classroom environment with structure, repetition, and personalized instruction, something began to shift. Week after week, she started trusting her knowledge. She participated more. Her voice grew stronger.

And on exam day?
She passed.

But the bigger victory wasn’t just earning her permit. It was walking away with greater personal confidence and belief in herself.

That’s what maximizing independent living looks like for people with disabilities in Mercer County and Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Do you have a goal that feels just out of reach?
Let’s talk about the programs and resources that can help you get there.

🚗 Drive-Ability Winter Cohort starts soon - three spots remain!

In recognition of Black History Month, we continue highlighting prominent Black leaders who also lived with disabilities—an important part of their stories that is often overlooked.

This week, we honor Curtis Pride.

Curtis Pride is a former professional baseball player who competed at the Major League Baseball level and represented the United States in international competition, including the Olympic Games. He is deaf and has been a trailblazer for disability representation in professional sports.

Beyond his athletic career, Curtis Pride has been a strong advocate for accessibility, inclusion, and awareness—particularly within the Deaf and hard of hearing community. His leadership helped challenge assumptions about disability and expand conversations around access in athletics.

By sharing stories like Curtis Pride’s, we recognize that people with disabilities have always been leaders, innovators, and change-makers.

At the Progressive Center for Independent Living, we are proud to support independence, access, and opportunity for people with disabilities in Mercer County, Hunterdon County, and across New Jersey.

💗 Life Through Different Lenses: Give Back Night 💗

In January, our Life Through Different Lenses Peer Group shared a little extra love by coming together for a Give Back Night, assembling care packages and giveaways for individuals and families in need throughout our community.

Giving back is one of the strongest love languages there is. 💝

For our peer group, this night was about kindness, connection, and showing that people with disabilities are leaders, helpers, and changemakers in Mercer County and Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Events like this also help break down real barriers. They create welcoming spaces where people with disabilities can connect with peers, build confidence, and participate fully.

Our peer groups are about more than activities. They’re about belonging, shared purpose, and community that sees each person for who they are.

✨ Ready to join us?
Our next Life Through Different Lenses Peer Group is always welcoming new members!
