In 1846, Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. recommended the term “anesthesia” to describe the state of insensibility produced by inhaled ether. Later, in 1902, Dr. Mathias J. Seifert of Chicago coined the terms “anesthesiology” and “anesthesiologist,” defining an anesthesiologist as the scientific authority on anesthesia and anesthetics.
