UPDATE: as many of you are aware, the FMCSA recently implemented a new method for submitting medical examination results. Due to the challenges that have been present during this transition, the FMCSA issued a temporary waiver allowing CDL holders to continue relying on a paper copy of the medical examiner's certificate as proof of medical certification for up to 15 days after the certificate was issued. The agency modified this waiver on August 21, 2025, to allow CDL holders, CLP holders, and motor carriers to rely on the paper copy of the medical examiner’s certificate as proof of the driver’s medical certification for up to 60 days after the date the medical examiner’s certificate was issued. The FMCSA determined that modifying the initial waiver is in the public interest to prevent undue hardship on drivers with valid medical certification and their employers due to potential processing delays outside of their control during this transition period. The full contents of the waiver can be found are linked below.

Happy Monday everyone! As most of us are aware, Hurricane Erin will be passing off the coast around Wednesday this week. While it appears there is little threat of major impacts to inland NC, we will continue to closely monitor the forecast and keep our patients up to date with any changes to our schedule. Praying for your safety as Erin passes by, as well as for the rest of this hurricane season!

Please bear with us as we work with the FMCSA and individual state licensing agencies regarding the new method of submitting certificates. After speaking with several sources, our understanding is that the FMCSA is receiving the certificates; however, the delay is with the FMCSA forwarding the certificates to the individual states. Please be sure to carry your paper copy of your certificate with you until you receive a letter from the DMV stating that they have received your certificate.

UPDATE:
On July 14, 2025, FMCSA issued a temporary waiver to support the ongoing transition to the Medical Examiner’s Certification Integration (NRII) system, which replaces the traditional paper-based process with secure electronic transmission of medical certification data.

FMCSA acknowledges that some drivers may experience delays during this transition and aims to prevent disruptions for drivers and employers.

What does this mean for drivers?

The waiver allows interstate CDL and CLP holders, as well as motor carriers, to continue using paper copies of medical examiner’s certificates as proof of medical certification for up to 15 days after issuance.

This waiver is effective through October 12, 2025.

What does this mean for examiners?

Medical examiners are to continue issuing paper certificates alongside electronic submissions during this period.

Good afternoon! As many are aware, the FMCSA and NCDOT have recently implemented a new system for submitting medical certifications for CDL drivers. As with anything new, there will be an adjustment period. We are aware that many drivers are receiving letters stating that their medical certificates have not been received. Rest assured that we are following every step of the new process and are sending the certificates in before the driver leaves the office, however once they are received by the DOT, they are still dealing with issues pertaining to the new system. Please bear with us as we work with the DOT as they implement this new system. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
