The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group

The Pediatric Specialists Medical Group We began as a husband and wife practice and have worked together for more than 15 years.

We have developed our practice to be as child and family friendly as possible. As the practice has grown we have been fortunate to add an outstanding Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and then an excellent Pediatrician who both share in our love of children and dedication to the high standard of care we have set in our practice. Because we are all parents ourselves we understand the special trust our patients place in us. As a small group we offer personalized attention and consistency of care. When your child is ill and needs to be seen they will be seen the same day by someone who knows their history and will provide the best care possible. If there is a complex medical problem we will be personally committed to making sure that everything is done to make the right diagnosis and obtain the best care available. When there are concerns after hours you will be able to speak with one of us directly. Our goal is to provide the most up to date medical care for our patients by working together as a team with parents to help keep our patients both healthy and happy.

We have had quite a few parents recently questioning the use of metals, specifically mercury and aluminum, in vaccines. This video does an excellent job of clarifying how and why such ingredients are used and why modern vaccines are safe and effective.

It should be noted that thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative that was commonly used in vaccines for decades, was found to be safe but was removed from most vaccines in 1999 as a precautionary measure. The only vaccine that continues to use this preservative is multi-dosed flu vials, which most pediatric practices no longer use.

Aluminum salts are used in some vaccines to help make them more effective. Aluminum is the 3rd most common element on Earth and found almost everywhere. The typical adult and older child consumes about 5-10mg of aluminum every day. A typical formula fed infant will ingest 38mg in the first 6 months of life. During that same time period, a fully immunized infant will have received a total of 4.4mg from vaccines. The amount of aluminum from vaccines is minimal, the vaccines do not increase the amount of aluminum found in the blood, and after 80+ years of studying aluminum in vaccines we can be reassured they are safe.

During office visits we frequently will recommend limiting screen time to a specific amount of time based on the child’s age. We understand that these recommendations may not be realistic for all children but hopefully they reinforce the importance of not allowing technology use to become detrimental. The truth is every child is different, and parents need to tailor the boundaries on technology use to their child’s and their family’s personalities and situation.. The AAP has come up with a more nuanced approach called the 5 C’s to help parents manage their children’s screen time and technology use. The 5 Cs are Child, Content, Calm, Crowding out, and Communication. The link below has a video that describes the basics of the 5Cs. I will add another link in the comments to an AAP page with many other links and recommendations regarding children and technology.

Discover The 5 Cs of Media Use—a simple, research-based framework to help pediatricians guide families on healthy screen habits. Includes age-based handouts for well-child visits, focused on child development, communication, and balanced media use.

In an environment of increased vaccine hesitancy and mixed messages regarding vaccines, we stand in agreement with the AAPs statement in the attached link. Vaccines are the safest and most cost-effective way of preventing disease, disability and death in children. Click on the link to see the full AAP statement as well as the recommended immunization schedule. Every one of our medical providers fully immunized their children because we knew it was the right thing to do for them and for society as a whole.

Flu vaccines are here! If your child is 6 months and older we highly recommend they get vaccinated for the flu. As a reminder, the first year a child under 9 years of age receives the flu vaccine they will need a booster a month later. The flu vaccine can decrease the chances your child will get the flu, and should they get the flu they are at a much lower risk for serious complications such as pneumonia, hospitalization, and death.
Call to schedule your child’s flu vaccine today!

I try to go for a walk everyday on my lunch break, and sometimes get to see some pretty cool stuff. We’re always encouraging our patients to get outside and get some exercise. They may get hot and sweaty but it’s worth it!
