Dr. Luis Cadena, an equine veterinarian, recounts his journey from debilitating back pain to recovery after minimally invasive spine surgery at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. His lifelong passion for horses was increasingly overshadowed by excruciating back pain. For years, he lived with a constant ache that he managed with shots and rehab, but the pain finally overwhelmed him while working with a horse, leaving him unable to stand.

An MRI revealed that his vertebrae were failing. At HCA Florida Ocala Hospital, neurological surgeon Dr. Main performed a minimally invasive spine surgery, a procedure that offers smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery. Immediately following the procedure, Dr. Cadena experienced a profound relief, waking up for the first time in 10 years completely pain-free.

Dr. Main explains that the minimally invasive approach allows surgeons to precisely target problem areas while minimizing impact on surrounding healthy tissue. This specialized care is designed to help patients regain their quality of life. Today Dr. Cadena is finally free from pain, happily working with horses once more and reflecting on how HCA Florida Ocala Hospital helped him get his life back.

Heart conditions don’t always begin in childhood — and they don’t always make themselves known early.

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) can remain hidden well into adulthood, only surfacing later in life. That’s why, especially for older adults, staying proactive with regular checkups and specialized care is essential to catching silent heart issues before they become serious.

At HCA Florida Healthcare, part of the broader HCA Healthcare network, we’re committed to delivering comprehensive heart, lung, and vascular services — right here in your community. In 2024 alone, HCA Healthcare's Congenital Heart Programs performed over 700 CHD surgeries, helping patients of all ages live healthier, fuller lives.

🏈Derrel Kelley spent his entire life playing football with one dream: to play in the NFL. While the 23-year-old athlete was training for tryouts this spring he suffered a stroke. His mom found him collapsed on the floor, unable to move or speak.

Paramedics brought Derrel to HCA Florida Northside Hospital, the first comprehensive stroke center in Pinellas County and nationally recognized for lifesaving care for stroke patients.

Derrel is now encouraging others to know the signs and symptoms of stroke at any age. We are proud to have seven hospitals named among the top 10% in the nation for stroke treatment in 2023, with three in the top 5%. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of a stroke, call 911 or go to an emergency room immediately: https://bit.ly/4rmfSh2.

"Patients can receive life-saving cardiac care right here in their own community," said Dr. Sailendra Upendram, interventional cardiologist with HCA Florida Healthcare.

When longtime coach and community volunteer Jeremy Martin suffered a sudden widowmaker heart attack while alone at his hurricane-damaged home, he chose to trust the same expert team his community has relied on for years. That decision saved his life.

As soon as Jeremy arrived at HCA Florida Englewood Hospital, the cardiac catheterization lab team was ready. Within minutes, they identified a 100% blockage of the LAD artery — a type of heart attack that is often fatal without immediate intervention. Dr. Upendram and his team quickly placed stents to restore blood flow.

“The professionalism was like no other,” Jeremy shared. His wife, Joey, expressed deep gratitude for the compassion shown to her in the middle of crisis. "The nurse came out several times to reassure me. I felt he was in great hands because of the team there."

Today, Jeremy has made a full recovery. He continues to coach, serve, and impact the community he loves.

His story is a powerful reminder: heart attacks can strike without warning, and every second matters. Take charge of your heart health. Learn more about cardiology services, find a heart care expert, and complete a free heart risk assessment with HCA Florida Healthcare: https://bit.ly/3KmnIXq.

No matter what you’ve got cooking this , remember to prioritize safety. In crowded kitchens and around deep fryers, accidents can happen fast. Each year around Thanksgiving, there’s an increase in cooking-related burn injuries, and unattended cooking is the primary cause, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Follow these tips for what to avoid if you or someone else needs .

If you suffer a mild or first-degree burn, the affected area may swell or turn red. You can treat these burns at home with simple first aid steps:

🧼Clean the area with soap and cool water.
🧴Apply a thin layer of ointment.
🩹Dress the wound with sterile non-stick gauze.
💊Take over-the-counter medication to manage pain.

For more serious burns, immediate medical attention is critical. You can always find help fast at your local emergency room – but for complex cases, specialized care is available through our broader HCA Healthcare network, home to 11 American Burn Association-recognized burn centers across nine states.
