I used to HATE having my clients track because they often came to me already doing it - but here’s what I’ve learned in the last year….
Tracking wasn’t the problem. Not understanding what they were tracking, how to use it, and how to eventually stop? That was the problem.
Tracking isn’t meant to be a forever job. It’s data collection. You track to see patterns, gaps, and opportunities.
The biggest mistakes clients make with tracking:
1. Treating tracking like a report card
Every missed macro = “I failed.”Nope.
Missed protein? Cool now we know.
2. Tracking without context
Most clients track numbers with zero understanding of:
- Minimums vs targets
- Why protein/fat/carbs need balance
- What hunger, cravings, or energy are telling them
So they just hit numbers.
3. Trying to be 100% accurate
Food scale obsession = burnout
4. Using tracking to eat less, not eat enough
Clients track…See calories…Panic…Cut more.
Then:
- Hunger skyrockets
- Metabolism downshifts
- Weight loss stalls
- They “hate tracking” (understandably)
5. Never learning how to stop
If the end goal is “track forever,” of course people rebel.
How I make tracking actually work for clients
1. We track with a purpose
2. We focus on minimums first
3. We review patterns
4. We transition out intentionally
Tracking isn’t toxic.Misusing tracking is.
