Ah, The Moon! The reflecting lantern that illuminates trees in the dark of night, feminine energy, puller of tides, Daughter of Earth. Within the Tarot, The Moon often corresponds with The High Priestess. Mystery, dark feminine energy, hidden secrets: these are reflected in both cards. However, whereas The High Priestess teaches us to look around us for hidden mysteries, The Moon is more introspective.
Oftentimes The Moon in Tarot makes me think of something called “The Dark Night of the Soul.” It’s something that those who undergo a spiritual awakening, or any kind of major internal shift, often refer to. The Dark Night of the Soul is a time of dark introspection in which one often becomes disillusioned with the mundane tasks and challenges of life, with the way society operates, with issues pertaining to social justice, etc. It’s a time when we turn inward to truly dig underneath shame, hurt, blame, guilt, and everyday struggles to get at the heart of our values and find out who we truly are.
When we see The Moon in a reading, it may indicate that deep introspection is needed or has already taken place. The Moon says “sit down, shut up, close your eyes, take a breath, and think.” The Moon is silent and yet pulls entire oceans back and forth and back and forth. There is a quiet strength that comes from deep introspection.
Take some time today to just sit and be with yourself. What has been on your mind? Why do these things matter to you? If you’ve been stressed, dig beneath that stress into what is sparking that anxious reaction in you. Examine this for a time, and then relax your grip on these thoughts like the Moon relaxes its grip on the ocean. How do you feel?
