🧠 “Healing isn’t linear. And that’s okay.”
— Jessica Hillen, Clinical Director at River’s Bend
Some days feel like backslides. Some wins are invisible. But if you’re showing up at all — you’re doing more than you realize.
Here are 5 underrated wins in recovery that absolutely count:
1️⃣ You stopped yourself mid-text and deleted the “I miss you” message.
2️⃣ You drank actual water today. Yes, that’s a win.
3️⃣ You didn’t spiral — you sat with the feeling (and maybe cursed a little).
4️⃣ You remembered your therapist’s voice and chose to pause.
5️⃣ You felt broken… but didn’t ghost the world. You kept going.
✨ We see you. The messy progress is still progress.
💬 Tell us — what’s your version of a “quiet win” in healing?
Let’s normalize recovery that’s human, imperfect, and still happening.

💙 “The work Matt did in therapy was brave. The fact that he’s now sharing it publicly? That’s something I’ll never stop being proud of.” — Stephanie Howey, LMSW
Matt’s story has already reached so many people, and it’s worth revisiting through the eyes of someone who walked alongside him in recovery: his therapist.
Stephanie’s reflection reminds us:
🧠 That strength doesn’t always look strong on the outside
🧠 That recovery isn’t a straight line — but it is possible
🧠 That every time someone shares their story, stigma loses power

😮‍💨 Overwhelmed? Here’s the reset formula we use at River’s Bend.
🧠 Your brain doesn’t need 10 solutions. It needs 1 simple shift. Start here:
1️⃣ Label the moment: “I’m overwhelmed.”
2️⃣ Breathe intentionally: 4-4-6. Your body calms your brain.
3️⃣ Shrink the task: What’s just one thing you can do?
4️⃣ Take that step with care. Hydrate. Move. Text. Pause.
5️⃣ Repeat when needed.
🗣️ “If you’re overwhelmed, simplify. One step, one breath, one choice at a time.”
— Bruce Goldberg, LMSW
✨ These are just a few of the tools we teach in our trauma-informed therapy programs.

💙 Love languages are more than preferences — they’re patterns of survival.
What if your need for constant reassurance isn’t “needy”… but comes from never hearing the words you needed as a child?
What if the way you love others is the very way you once had to keep yourself safe?
This Valentine’s season, we’re inviting you to look beneath the surface, and explore how trauma might be shaping the way you love, connect, and respond in relationships.
📥 Our newest blog breaks it down and includes a free downloadable worksheet for personal or couples reflection.
✨ Read it here: https://www.riversbendpc.com/why-we-love-the-people-we-do/

Explore how attachment styles, trauma, and brain chemistry shape who we love and how therapy helps build healthier connections.

We finally did it—after the holiday madness! 🎉

Our team got together for a Holiday/New Year party at Uptown Grille in Commerce Township, and it was exactly what we needed: time to connect, laugh, unwind, and celebrate each other.

In our line of work, we’re always showing up for others, and we believe in this wholeheartedly: caregivers need care too. Taking time to recharge together helps us continue to bring our best to the people and families we serve.

So much fun was had, and we’re grateful for the memories (and the great food!). 💙
