We had a great Lunch & Learn with some of our board members yesterday!

Over lunch and a lively round of Taskmaster, we learned new things about each other, stretched our problem‑solving skills, and shared plenty of laughs.

We’re grateful for a board that shows up with curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to jump into any challenge - big or small.

Here’s to a team that leads with heart and a sense of fun.

💗 A Valentine’s Week Friendship Spotlight! 💗

At Independence Prep Extension, we see all kinds of meaningful connections grow - but this one has our hearts especially full.

Jacqueline and Sebastian recently discovered they shared two important things: their Jewish faith and the same former high school. Once they realized it, they hit it off instantly - chatting nonstop and connecting like old friends. And just like that, a new friendship was born.

Their story is a beautiful reminder that Valentine’s Day isn’t only about romance. It’s about all the relationships that make life richer: friendship, belonging, shared identity, and the joy of finding “your person” in a new place.

At On My Own of Michigan, we’re proud to create spaces where friendships like theirs can form and flourish - connections that build confidence, community, and a true sense of belonging.

Here’s to friendships that grow in the most unexpected ways!

Celebrating Olivia!

If you’ve met Olivia, you know she brings joy, determination, and so much heart into everything she does. She’s been part of our Independent Living Program for several years, and today we’re celebrating one of her newest accomplishments: mastering a new recipe!

Recently, Olivia made her very first batch of potato pancakes - a dish that’s especially meaningful because her grandma used to make them. She was so excited to recreate something that reminds her of those special moments, and she was incredibly proud of how they turned out.

As Olivia continues thriving on her own, she’s been building new skills in the kitchen and across her daily life. With her hard work and the steady support from our Independent Living Program, she’s reaching new milestones and embracing independence in ways that truly inspire us

Way to go, Olivia - we can’t wait to see what you cook up next!

Meet Robyn - and see what’s possible at Independence College.

When Robyn first joined On My Own of Michigan in 2023, she felt unsure about being in new places, meeting new people, and imagining a life away from home.

But step by step, with support from our programs, staff, family, and peers, she built her confidence, discovered her strengths, and began seeing independence as something she could achieve.

That growth led her to Independence College - where she’s now thriving.

In less than three years, Robyn has:

- moved into her college apartment with roommates,
- started her first job at a movie theater,
- and begun building a future she’s excited about.

This is what happens when young adults with developmental disabilities get the right supports, opportunities, and community behind them.

✨ Independence College is now accepting applications for Fall 2026.

If you know a young adult who dreams of living independently, building life skills, and gaining confidence, we’d love to meet them.

January at Independence Prep Extension: Building Strong Minds & Bright Futures

This month, our Independence Prep Extension program is diving deep into two powerful themes that shape lifelong success: mental health and employment skills.

We believe that independence isn’t just about learning tasks - it’s about having the confidence, resilience, and tools to thrive in everyday life. That’s why our students are exploring:

Mental Wellness Skills:
From understanding emotions to practicing strategies for staying calm and focused, we’re helping students strengthen their inner foundation. Mental health is a key part of independence, and we’re creating a safe, supportive space to talk, learn, and grow.

Employment Readiness:
Our students are also gaining hands-on experience with real-world employment skills - communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and workplace expectations. Every activity helps build confidence and prepares them for future opportunities.
Together, these lessons empower our students to step forward with courage, clarity, and a vision for what’s possible.

Here’s to a month of growth, self-discovery, and skill-building!

Skill Building in Action!

Our Skill Building group has been hitting the court recently, learning pickleball - and having an absolute blast! 🏓

Our program creates opportunities for our members as they explore new interests, discover fun and meaningful ways to stay active, deepen friendships, and grow their confidence along the way. Every laugh through a missed shot, every cheer from a teammate, and every newly learned skill reflects the heart of this program: empowering our members to build healthy, fulfilling independence through shared experiences and continuous learning.

Whether it’s picking up a paddle for the first time or teaming up for doubles, our group continues to show that growth happens when we’re willing to play, practice, and have fun together.

Here’s to new experiences, active bodies, supportive friendships, and a whole lot of fun - on and off - the court!

🎉 Member Spotlight: Declan! 🎉

We’re so excited to share that Declan, a member of our Independent Living Program, has launched his very own YouTube channel - Declan Loves K‑Pop - where he dives into topics including music and TV shows

Starting a channel takes courage, creativity, and passion - and Declan really made this happen for himself. He’s having a great time creating content he loves and sharing his enthusiasm with the world. (And the timing couldn’t be better with a certain K‑Pop movie now an Oscar nominee!)

While this accomplishment is entirely Declan’s, it reflects the heart of our Independent Living Program - supporting members as they build skills, confidence, and independence to pursue goals that are as unique as they are. Everyone’s path looks different, and we’re here to walk alongside them on their journey.

We’re so proud of Declan for expressing himself so confidently and stepping into something that brings him joy.

Independence Prep gives teens and young adults with developmental disabilities hands‑on opportunities to build the skills that support greater independence - at their own pace and in a supportive, engaging environment.

✨ Now accepting applications for our next session: April 10–12. Learn more and register at: https://onmyownofmi.org/our-programs/independence-prep/

If you know a student who could benefit from this experience, we’d love to welcome them!
