March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month - a time to celebrate the voices, strengths, and talents of people with developmental disabilities.

At On My Own of Michigan, we see these strengths every day: students learning to navigate the world with confidence, adults building independent lives, and families discovering what’s possible when the right support is in place.

If our mission resonates with you, we’d love for you to walk alongside us. Your support helps create more moments of growth, friendship, learning, and independence for the people we serve.

💙 Celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month with us.
💙 Help make independence possible.

(Give, share, or simply spread the word—every action counts.)

Independence looks different for everyone - and for Joe, it's knowing he can get where he needs to go, anytime.

Joe has been using SMART fixed‑route buses for years to get to work and appointments. It’s not always easy - routes change, buses run late, weather gets tough - but the independence he feels is worth every challenge.

Last year, he wanted a backup plan.

So, he decided he wanted to start using Uber. We were there to help him learn.

Together, we practiced booking rides, rode with him until he felt confident, and even met him at his drop‑off spots as he transitioned to riding solo. Now, Joe uses Uber just as easily as the bus - giving him reliable options no matter the weather, time of day, or schedule curveballs.

Today, his transportation skills aren’t just practical…they’re empowering.

And the pride he feels? That’s what independence is all about. 💙

Independence College: Where Confidence Meets Community

Our Independence College students are out in the community - and thriving!

They’ve been volunteering at a local high school, building connections and giving back in meaningful ways. In addition to that work, they’ve been leading roundtable discussions with teens, sharing their personal experiences with independent living and encouraging younger students to see what’s possible for their own futures. It’s an empowering opportunity for our students to step into leadership roles - and a powerful moment of learning for the teens they meet.

From volunteering and mentoring to giving apartment tours and practicing real‑world skills, they’re building confidence, friendships, and independence every day.

If you have a developmental disability and are exploring your next steps, now is the time --

We had a great Lunch & Learn with some of our board members yesterday!

Over lunch and a lively round of Taskmaster, we learned new things about each other, stretched our problem‑solving skills, and shared plenty of laughs.

We’re grateful for a board that shows up with curiosity, collaboration, and a willingness to jump into any challenge - big or small.

Here’s to a team that leads with heart and a sense of fun.

💗 A Valentine’s Week Friendship Spotlight! 💗

At Independence Prep Extension, we see all kinds of meaningful connections grow - but this one has our hearts especially full.

Jacqueline and Sebastian recently discovered they shared two important things: their Jewish faith and the same former high school. Once they realized it, they hit it off instantly - chatting nonstop and connecting like old friends. And just like that, a new friendship was born.

Their story is a beautiful reminder that Valentine’s Day isn’t only about romance. It’s about all the relationships that make life richer: friendship, belonging, shared identity, and the joy of finding “your person” in a new place.

At On My Own of Michigan, we’re proud to create spaces where friendships like theirs can form and flourish - connections that build confidence, community, and a true sense of belonging.

Here’s to friendships that grow in the most unexpected ways!

Celebrating Olivia!

If you’ve met Olivia, you know she brings joy, determination, and so much heart into everything she does. She’s been part of our Independent Living Program for several years, and today we’re celebrating one of her newest accomplishments: mastering a new recipe!

Recently, Olivia made her very first batch of potato pancakes - a dish that’s especially meaningful because her grandma used to make them. She was so excited to recreate something that reminds her of those special moments, and she was incredibly proud of how they turned out.

As Olivia continues thriving on her own, she’s been building new skills in the kitchen and across her daily life. With her hard work and the steady support from our Independent Living Program, she’s reaching new milestones and embracing independence in ways that truly inspire us

Way to go, Olivia - we can’t wait to see what you cook up next!

Meet Robyn - and see what’s possible at Independence College.

When Robyn first joined On My Own of Michigan in 2023, she felt unsure about being in new places, meeting new people, and imagining a life away from home.

But step by step, with support from our programs, staff, family, and peers, she built her confidence, discovered her strengths, and began seeing independence as something she could achieve.

That growth led her to Independence College - where she’s now thriving.

In less than three years, Robyn has:

- moved into her college apartment with roommates,
- started her first job at a movie theater,
- and begun building a future she’s excited about.

This is what happens when young adults with developmental disabilities get the right supports, opportunities, and community behind them.

✨ Independence College is now accepting applications for Fall 2026.

If you know a young adult who dreams of living independently, building life skills, and gaining confidence, we’d love to meet them.
