As we continue our focus on Developmental Disabilities
Awareness Month, we want to pause and share some details about how local property taxes support people with developmental disabilities in our community. This graphic outlines how the funds are collected and spent in our community.

For more information about property taxes, we encourage folks to attend the Property Tax 101 session hosted by Miami County Auditor Matt Gearhardt on March 24 from 6-7:30pm at the Troy-Miami County Public Library.

The Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities is recognizing March as National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. Observed each year across the country, DD Awareness Month highlights the importance of inclusion and raises awareness about the barriers individuals with developmental disabilities continue to face.

National DD Awareness Month was established in 1987 when President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation calling on Americans to provide individuals with disabilities “the encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.” Since then, significant strides have been made in advancing inclusion, access and opportunity. However, continued education and advocacy remain essential.

“DD Awareness Month is an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come while also recommitting ourselves to ensuring that people with developmental disabilities are fully included in all aspects of community life,” said Brian Green, MCBDD Superintendent. “By recognizing DD Awareness Month, we can continue building communities where everyone feels a true sense of belonging.”

Throughout March, MCBDD will mark the month through billboard and print advertising, dine-to-donate events at BW3 (March 4) and Skyline Chili (March 31), reading events to young students at local schools and a Spirit Night basketball game where Special Olympics athletes will play against first responders at Troy High School on March 17 at 6:30 p.m.

The Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) serves more than 1,100 people of all ages in Miami County. MCBDD directly provides Early Intervention for ages 0-2, Service and Support Administration (case management) for ages 3 through the end of life, Special Olympics programming, recreation services for all ages and trainings for Direct Support Professionals (caregivers). MCBDD also partners with local service providers that offer adult day services, in-home care, job training and transportation services to people with developmental disabilities in Miami County. MCBDD’s funding comes from local property taxes (approximately 70%) and state and federal funding (approximately 30%). For more information about MCBDD, visit miamicountydd.org or call (937) 440-3000.
