This week has been Patient Safety Awareness Week, an important week to bring together healthcare leaders, providers, and patients to celebrate safety initiatives, promote education, and encourage open communication between patients and their care teams.

At Troy Regional, Patient Safety Awareness Week is important, but we like to think that every week is Patient Safety Week!

At Troy Regional Medical Center, our people are what make our organization special, and Alicia Whittington is a perfect example of that spirit.

Alicia, the winner of Troy Regional's 2025 Pinnacle Award, has been part of the Troy Regional family for nearly 12 years. Today, she serves as the Director of Revenue Cycle, overseeing several key areas including outpatient registration, ER registration, patient accounts, and the hospital switchboard. Her role helps ensure that the patient experience, from the first phone call to the final billing process, runs smoothly and efficiently.

What makes Alicia’s story even more meaningful is her journey within the organization. She began her career at Troy Regional as a biller/collector in the business office. Recognizing her dedication and potential, the administration team encouraged her growth and allowed her to assume a leadership role in the clinics. A few years later, when the Director of Revenue Cycle position became available, Alicia was selected to lead the department.
For Alicia, the culture at Troy Regional is what sets it apart.

"I like working here because it truly is a family atmosphere. Administration believes in building people up within the organization and giving them opportunities to grow," she said.

She believes that family atmosphere is something you feel every day when you walk through the doors.

"We love one another like family and sometimes disagree like family, but at the end of the day we come together as a team. We support each other’s children, stand by one another during the hard times and celebrate the good times together. In other places I’ve worked you felt like a number, but here I know I am loved and cared about. The team at Troy Regional is very special."

Alicia’s journey reflects the heart of Troy Regional. We are your friends. We are your neighbors. We are Troy Regional!

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness month, and according to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance, approximately 1 in 24 people in the United States will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer during their lifetime.

Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers when caught early through screening

It is encouraged for everyone age 45 and older to talk with their healthcare provider about getting screened. If you have a family history or certain risk factors, you may need to start even earlier.

Whitney Barron carries a reminder of her melanoma journey every day — the scar on her arm and the story behind it.

Last year, Whitney, Troy Regional’s Education Coordinator, was diagnosed with Stage 1B melanoma. After successful surgery and ongoing skin checks, she recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to advocate for melanoma awareness with more than 70 advocates from across the country during Melanoma Advocacy Days.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to advocate for the melanoma community and share my story,” Whitney said.

During the trip, Whitney met with lawmakers to help raise awareness about the deadliest form of skin cancer and the importance of research, prevention, and early detection.

We are proud of Whitney for using her voice to make a difference and raise awareness for others.
