Virginia Lee Hughes Blackmon
April 29, 1937 - February 14, 2026
Known lovingly as Virginia, Ginny, Mama, Granny, and most recently “Ginka,” Virgina Lee Hughes Blackmon, age 88, passed peacefully on February 14, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of selfless love, unwavering faith, and devoted service to others.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, James Royce Blackmon, her parents, Gus Henry and Esther King Hughes; and her brothers and sisters, Henry Hughes (Sybil), Annie Julia Hughes Drinkard, Byron Hughes, King Hughes, Larry Hughes, and Kip Hughes.
She is survived by her devoted children: daughter Patricia Bedingfield (Charles) and sons Jimmy Blackmon (Judy), Timmy Blackmon (Stephanie), and Jeffrey Blackmon (Sherrie). She was the proud matriarch of a large and loving family, including her grandchildren: Chris Blackmon (April, deceased); Christy Bedingfield Wright (Michael); Brian Blackmon (Candace); Russ Bedingfield (Kasey); Courtney Blackmon Moseley (Todd); Ashley Blackmon Bryan; Mackenzie Blackmon Hall (AJ); and Cooper Blackmon (Bailey), along with 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Virginia is also survived by her siblings Sue Hughes Eiland (Charles, deceased) and Fox Hughes (Martha Jean), along with her sisters-in-law Gloria Baggett Hughes, Sue Pouncey Hughes, Audrey Cannon Hughes, and Rosemary McGovern Hughes as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom she cherished deeply.
Virginia was the very definition of unselfish, always placing others before herself. She had a God-given gift for making everyone feel like family, and her legacy is simple yet profound; everyone who knew her, loved her. She instilled in her family the values of hard work, strength, and meeting life with grit and grace. Those lessons continue to shape generations.
Virginia spent many dedicated years as a supervisor at American Apparel, where she earned the respect and affection of those she worked alongside and led. She also worked as a lunchroom supervisor at Goshen High School, the same school her children attended, combining her strong work ethic with her natural gift for nurturing others.
Gifted with her hands and her heart, Virginia was a talented seamstress who lovingly created for her family. She was perhaps best known, however, for her cooking. Her biscuits, tea cakes, dressing, dumplings, apple tarts, and famous green punch became staples at family gatherings, and treasured traditions passed down through generations.
Hospitality was simply who she was. Serving others brought her deep joy, and her Sunday lunch table was a place of warmth and welcome. Family, friends, neighbors, and even first-time visitors were greeted with open arms. Around her table, people found not just good food, but comfort, connection, and a place to belong.
Virginia Lee Hughes Blackmon leaves behind a family and a community forever shaped by her kindness, sacrifice, and love. Her life was a testimony of love in action, and her impact will be felt for generations to come.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, February 17, 2026 at 10 am at Providence Cemetery in Glenwood with Rev. Steve Sanders officiating and Dillard Funeral Home directing.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
