STAR Foundation

STAR Foundation The STAR Foundation is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization that has been offering renowned personal growth retreats for over four decades.

STAR Retreats— Where you find your way home. In the process of growing up, many of us lose connection with who we really are. We lose access to our own truth, inner knowing, and even our own heart, keeping us from experiencing a life full of real spontaneity, joy, and purpose. In the safe and nurturing environment STAR provides, you will receive the time and support you need to discover the sources of your deepest blocks, and be assisted in gently dissolving them. Our heart-centered approach facilitates a deep connection to your own inner truth and inner knowing, allowing you to heal the wounds of the past, mend your heart, and experience the falling away of fear and doubt. The STAR process is designed to allow you to begin to find your way back— to experience your essence, your authenticity, the totality of who you are. Here, you can find a reconnection with your innermost heart, a coming home to your soul.

Why do we continue to fall into the same 'hole' over and over? There we are walking along then, seemingly without warning, we are down on the ground and wondering what happened. Or perhaps we see the hole but feel unable to avoid it. Whether we see it or not, it's there.

In our typical human way, we first seek to place external blame for this misfortune. How unfair! We'd be walking along quite nicely if not for the hole. And so we think; someone or something has done this to us. We are troubled by why this hole is there in the first place. Not to mention the trouble caused by falling into it!

It may take several falls before we notice the pattern, or more importantly, the role we play in it. The hole is there. And even if we didn't put it there, it is us who keep falling into it. From this space of self-awareness, we can then begin learning to navigate around it. As our skills improve, we don't fall in as often. When we do, we climb out faster. We begin to understand that it is in our power to avoid the hole.

As we continue to learn and grow, new and often unexpected possibilities open up to us. We may discover something perhaps not thought of before; the power of choice. We can choose to walk down a different street! And if we don't like that one, we can choose again.

This poem by Portia Nelson reveals the importance of living intentionally, constantly learning and growing, and how failure is part of the journey.

Many adults feel responsible for making sure others are having fun and forget about themselves in the process. More important than creating the fun is being part of it. Our friends, family, and especially our children, want us to get out there with them— and PLAY!

Play allows us to live life more fully. It increases happiness, creativity, and resourcefulness. With our mood uplifted, we are flexible and able to enjoy life in a less structured way. Our joy radiates outwards and draws others towards us. Play is something we all benefit from, but at times forget to make time for. With that in mind, the July 4th weekend is upon us and is a great opportunity to make time for play. Your mind, body and those you care about will thank you!

From the STAR Foundation, we wish you a safe, healthy, and playful holiday weekend!

Kathleen Alfano, Child Development and Play Expert, explains the benefits that play offers people of all ages and offers some tips on how to incorporate play into your day.

Not many can ignore the giggles of a sweet baby. Even in passing, a baby's laugh easily becomes our own. And however brief the interaction, the connection is deeply felt.

Laughter is a form of joyful expression. It is the great human connector. Think about it. You hear people laughing. What do you do? Very likely, you instantly seek out the source. Like a moth to a flame, joyful expression draws us in. But why?

Joy is our inherent nature— our birthright. When in a joyful state, we engage with the world more positively. We connect with others more easily. Access to higher-level thinking expands. Attachment bonds are strengthened and deepened. We feel connected— because we are!

As babies, we know that laughter keeps our caregivers engaged with us. We delight in receiving a return of our joyful expression and delight in returning it once again. We are born with the knowledge of the power of joyful expression and the power it has to connect and keep us connected to the world around us.

So the next time you hear a baby's laughter, be reminded that you, too, were born with this knowledge. Even if it's been a while since you've used it, it is always within you.

Babies start laughing before they can speak, and this delicious sound just may serve as a powerful source of human communication and connection, says psychology researcher Caspar Addyman.

“The single most important influence of a child’s intellectual development is the responsiveness of the mother to the cues of her baby.” Dr Michael Lewis

Society tells us that picking up a baby "too much" will spoil them. Here's how science and cross-cultural evidence shows that the opposite is true.

After months of hard work, we are excited to announce the launch of our newly redesigned website: starfound.org!

Our main goal was to better convey the energy of STAR and highlight the work that we do. We feel the new site is in better alignment with the work and gives a clearer picture of the process that has helped so many to transform their lives for more than 40 years.

Check out the site, then share with your friends, family, and anyone else who could benefit from the incredible healing power of STAR.

Our Story

Since the 1970's, the STAR Foundation has been instrumental in facilitating positive change in the lives of people from all over the world. The STAR Retreat has become recognized as a unique program that safely addresses early developmental trauma and other clinical conditions in a way that is not easily accomplished through traditional therapies alone.

STAR is a profoundly transformational 10-day program designed for adults from all walks of life. Participants are invited to journey deeply within themselves in a nurturing and protected environment to discover the roots of their problems. This awareness can open up a new path to a life of joy, growth, and wholeness.

Our wonderful and caring staff is comprised of all former STAR participants, many of whom are highly skilled and professionally recognized psychotherapists using both cognitive and experiential methods, involving physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of the human experience.

Our synergistic approach allows us to respond to each individuals need to affect mind, body, and spirit. The most in-depth program of its kind, STAR offers a carefully structured process of accelerated education and self-healing. In addition, our holistic approach to psychological and spiritual wellness, along with the support of our caring community, make STAR the place for doing deep healing work.
