Happy to see the local MPD backing cyclist.
Some drivers may feel that the road is made for cars only, but that concept needs to be shifted. Bicyclists are here to stay and are supposed to be on the road rather than the sidewalks.
Some tips for drivers:
1. Appreciate Bicyclist Vulnerability - A car weighs 2 tons or so, while the average bike is a mere 20 pounds. The car will win anytime the two objects collide.
2. Know Bicyclists' Rights- Bicycles in the roadway are considered vehicles and are on the same level as motorists.
3. Adjust That Attitude- Rather than thinking of the cyclists as in your way,, they should think of them as equals, just as entitled to the roadway as drivers are.
Imagine that is your friend or family member on the bike.
4. Consider the Benefits of Bicycling — for Drivers - Cyclists don't wear out the road, don’t pollute, and lessen traffic congestion.
5. Beware when turning – When turning right, cyclists going straight may not realize you are turning. Often bikes are going faster than people realize and cars will turn into their path.
6. Give cyclists room – Do not pass until it is safe to do so and with 3 feet clearance. Do not honk unnecessarily.
7. Look before you exit your car – Opening your car door into the path of a cyclist can be tragic.
We can make the roads safer for everyone if we work together Marietta.
