Emory Healthcare Medical Laboratory Science Program Prestigious medical facilities teaching students to be certified medical laboratory scientists

Emory Healthcare Medical Laboratory Science Program (EHC MLS) is a full-time hospital-based (4+1) program designed to prepare students, who already hold a bachelor degree, for the national Medical Laboratory Science certifying examination by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). The mission of the Program is to provide exceptional education and training that prepares future Medical Laboratory Scientists with the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to become leaders in the profession of clinical laboratory science. Students learn diagnostic testing basics, such as urinalysis, coagulation, clinical chemistry and immunohematology (blood bank), as well as the latest advancements and clinical testing skills in esoteric areas like molecular diagnostics, flow cytometry and histocompatibility (HLA).

Welcome to Blood Bank—one of the most challenging and critical parts of our Medical Laboratory Science program.

This section demands focus, precision, and persistence as students learn to perform blood typing, antibody screening, and compatibility testing—all vital to ensuring safe transfusions and saving lives behind the scenes.

While it’s one of the longest and most intensive parts of the curriculum, it’s also one of the most rewarding.

Swipe to see our students in action as they practice blood typing and putting their critical thinking to the test.

They’re not just learning the science—they’re preparing to make real-world impact.

Building Global Connections in the Lab!

In September, the Emory Medical Laboratory Science Program welcomed students and faculty from Gunma Paz College in Japan for a two-day cultural and academic exchange. The group toured the Emory Healthcare Laboratory at Emory University Hospital, participated in classroom sessions and clinical observations, and connected with our students, both past and present, and staff over lunch and collaborative learning.

The visit concluded with a certificate presentation and a walking tour of Emory University led by Dr. Shoichiro Ono, Associate Professor in Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, and Cell Biology. Experiences like this strengthen international collaboration and broaden the academic and cultural perspectives of students from both institutions. 💙🔬

A program this intense creates more than just skilled scientists—it builds a family. 💍💐

Last week, our students surprised their classmate with a decorated honorary desk to celebrate her upcoming wedding. From balloons and florals in her wedding colors to a tiara fit for a queen, it was a sweet reminder that love, friendship, and support live beyond the lab bench.

She’s not the only one celebrating—
💍 One of our students entered the program just after getting married…
💐 And two more will be saying “I do” soon!

We’re honored to witness and celebrate these milestones together.
Because here at Emory, success includes both personal and professional joy. 💙

📸 Swipe to see how our future medical laboratory scientists support one another through it all—from science to celebrations!

We’re always thrilled to see another class rise to the occasion and begin their journey as medical laboratory scientists. Today, we witnessed a meaningful milestone as our students took their professional oath — a powerful reminder of the values and responsibilities they carry forward.

📜 Watch them take their oath:

"As a Medical Laboratory Professional, I pledge to uphold my duty to Patients, the Profession and Society by:

Placing patients’ welfare above my own needs and desires.

Ensuring that each patient receives care that is safe, effective, efficient, timely, equitable and patient-centered.

Maintaining the dignity and respect for my profession.

Promoting the advancement of my profession.

Ensuring collegial relationships within the clinical laboratory and with other patient care providers.

Improving access to laboratory services.

Promoting equitable distribution of healthcare resources.

Complying with laws and regulations and protecting patients from others’ incompetent or illegal practice.

Changing conditions where necessary to advance the best interests of patients."

👏 Congratulations to our newest future scientists — the Class of 2025!
