We came to Southwest Vet Oncology in May with little hope for our previously healthy 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Buster. He had recently been diagnosed with Lymphoma by our vet and we were devastated. We decided to go ahead and see the oncologist recommended by our vet just to see if there was any way to make Buster more comfortable and give him a little more time with us. We really had no intention to enter into a costly treatment plan. However, after Buster's initial examination and tests, and being presented with all of our options by Dr. Wood, we decided to move forward and give treatment a shot. Boy, are we glad we did for so many reasons.

First of all, this practice is amazing. They are all so caring and receptive to any questions or hesitations. Everything is presented very thoroughly, keeping in mind our budget, our expectations, and our desire to spend more time with our pup. From Dr. Wood to Holly, the receptionist, to all the vet techs and other staff, we have been treated with compassion and empathy, and always feel like Buster is their most important patient ever as does he.

Happily, Buster has completed his course of treatment and is now in remission. We hope that it will last forever but are realistic that it may not. In the meantime, we are so happy to have had this additional time with him this summer. We have been able to take him to the beach in Michigan and California, and to see our son (Buster's "brother") and his new baby in California a few times, and to just enjoy being with him and being thankful for every day. Sure, it cost us a few dollars, but it was money well spent and we are glad that we went through with the treatment. We were also very lucky that Buster had few, if any, noticeable side effects and tolerated his treatment well. If anything cropped up in his bloodwork, Dr. Wood was able to handle it.

Fingers crossed for many more months with our pup, but we know that if anything happens, Southwest Vet Oncology and Dr. Wood will be there for us.

Congrats, Buster!!šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰šŸŽ‰

Our precious 11-year-old Dalmatian, Lily, was diagnosed with cancer, after having a tumor at the knee on her rear leg, an osteosarcoma. We were devastated and researched to find any options to help her live longer and to have remaining good quality of life. We found Southwest Veterinary Oncology and Lily was seen by Dr. Elizabeth McNiel. God couldn’t have led us to any better person’s hands in which to place the life of our beloved family member.

Lily underwent radiation treatment and a series of chemo treatments and just completed that series. We couldn’t be happier with the treatment by Dr. McNiel, and of the entire staff. All were so caring and empathetic to our concerns and treated us and Lily with great care and compassion. It was as if Lily was their only or most important patient!

From the reservationists, assistants, technicians, to Dr. McNiel; all were wonderful to us and eased us through this treatment program. We can’t thank them enough. We highly recommend this excellent team should you find yourself facing the same devastating diagnosis for you loved pet.

Congrats, Lily!

Dr. Duckett and the entire team at Southwest Veterinary Oncology are amazing! I can’t say enough good things about them. Buddy, a 12-year-old black Lab, completed his last round of C.H.O.P. chemo for Lymphoma. The staff was knowledgeable, kind, and beyond caring. Buddy looked forward to going to the ā€œdoctor’s officeā€. Thank you for your love and kindness, but especially for the extra time you gave us with Buddy – the greatest gift.

I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Wood and her staff. Everyone is kind, empathetic, knowledgeable, and they all very clearly love the animals that visit them. But best of all, because of their expertise, my pup is currently cancer-free! I can’t think of any higher compliment than that.

I hope I never need their services again. But if I do, I will be happy to return.

From the first phone call to Southwest Veterinary Oncology, continuing through the weeks of radiation treatment for my dog’s cancer, the interaction with Dr. McNiel and staff was exceptional. I have worked in veterinary medicine during my career and can attest that this oncology clinic is top notch. Dr. McNiel was proactive in providing the necessary testing prior to treatment to verify that Desi was strong enough to tolerate it. She educated me on the expected outcome as well as what to expect during the course of treatment and beyond. Nick and Kyle, radiation technicians, met with me before and after each treatment to assure that Desi was doing well at home and to let me know how each treatment went. Desi was always happy to come to the clinic. His tail wags told me he trusted and liked everyone he came in contact with. I will be forever grateful to the staff for their kindness and expertise during this difficult time.
Good job Desi!

Most amazing team I've ever met! Such great people who are truly passionate about what they do! They treat Stevie so well and go above and beyond to let her know she is loved. This team encourages Stevie so well giving her treatments. They spoil her and giver her so much care! They are so accommodating to my work and allow her to hang out with them. She is always happy and excited to see them. I feel so grateful towards this amazing team. They made the whole treatment process a little easier to bear. It's not easy knowing she has cancer, but this team has made it more bearable, and I'm comfortable knowing her treatment was in great care with a wonderful team.

To Dr. Wood and her INCREDIBLE Staff,

Yesterday as I sat in my chair, I glanced outside of our back patio door to see one of the most incredible and purest of moments. Our beautiful dog Echo lay in the grass basking in the sun, her eyes half closed, and her nose raised slightly as she sniffed the cool afternoon air. As I sat and watched her, my eyes welled with tears because I recognized her expression…it was one of gratitude that most never truly experience. In that moment as I watched her take it all in, I knew without a doubt that she knew she was recently near her end. But now, she was a survivor who has battled and endured for another chance at life. I watched her for quite some time before she stretched out and enjoyed her nap in the warm winter sun.

Echo, a Belgian Malinois/Boxer mix, has quite literally saved my life on more than one occasion as I fought my own battles over the years. The bond that we share is simply indescribable, and certainly irreplaceable. In November 2023 we noticed that Echo was having some difficulty breathing and abnormal snoring sounds while sleeping, so we took her to the emergency room for evaluation. It was there that we first learned that Echo likely had Cancer with a very poor prognosis. To say that our family was devastated would be an understatement of a lifetime. Dogs certainly don’t live long enough as it is, but the thought of it being cut short by such a terrible disease hurt in ways that are indescribable.

We were referred to Southwest Veterinary Oncology for follow up and diagnosis confirmation. Just when we thought all hope had been lost and we would have to say goodbye to our beautiful Echo, we met Dr. Caroline Wood and her amazing staff. The care and compassion that we received was beyond anything we could have imagined as we navigated this incredibly difficult time. Dr. Wood explained Echo’s condition in terms we could understand, as well as all the options we had available for treatment, or for supportive care. She made it clear that because of the type of cancer Echo had, if we decided to treat it, it would have to be done aggressively and immediately. More importantly, she told us that with aggressive treatment, there was a significant chance that Echo’s cancer could in fact be successfully treated.

We were in absolute shock at the notion that there was legitimate hope that Echo could survive this disease. We had a few questions, but Dr. Wood was very patient and took the time to answer them all. What I appreciated most was her honesty and compassion. She explained all the possible outcomes, including the risks of a negative one.

We quickly made the decision to begin treatment immediately. We were amazed to be able to see positive changes in her condition after just a few treatments. Echo responded very well to the treatment and care she received from Dr. Wood and her staff. They were very thorough with her continued monitoring as she continued her treatments, and Echo actually enjoyed her visits with all her new friends.

Today, Echo is in remission and living her best life. The time we’ve shared with her this past year simply would not have been possible without the team at Southwest Veterinary Oncology.

We have shed many tears this past year as we navigated the roller coaster of emotions, but we’ve also had the opportunity to celebrate many victories and special occasions with your team, including Echo’s birthday! You saved Echo’s life, and have given us the opportunity to continue to love her and make more memories. We know that someday she will have to walk across the Rainbow Bridge…..but not today.

THANK YOU just doesn’t seem like it’s enough, but the words we need to express how truly grateful we are simply don’t exist. So, on behalf of our family and on behalf of Echo…. THANK YOU!!!!!!!
