Sin tratamiento, puede avanzar y convertirse en SIDA.
Se transmite por contacto con sangre, semen, fluidos vaginales o leche materna, principalmente a través de relaciones sexuales sin protección, el uso compartido de jeringas o de madre a hijo durante el embarazo, parto o lactancia.
